Save as html changed pictures from jpeg to gif

Post by David in Fresno »

I am using Open Office 4.1.2 Writer to create a manuscript to be submitted to Amazon Kindle for sale as an eBook. From what I gather on Kindle, the file it wants me to upload must be an html, so when I completed the manuscript (which includes 26 jpeg pictures with captions) I used "save as html." This should have created one text file with html as a file extension, and 26 discrete "matching" jpeg files. But this isn't what happened. All of the jpeg were "magically" turned into gif images, and Kindle can't use these. All images sent to Kindle must be either JPeg or tiff. So my question for the community is this, what must I do to tell open office "save as" to keep all images as jpegs? Attached is the source file - the document that contains the text of my projected ebook and the jpeg pictures.

Unfortunately your document isn't attached - please see [Forum] How to attach a document here Note maximum file size is 128K. If your file is larger, use a file sharing site such as Mediafire and post the link here. The link also contains information on how to anonymise your document if it contains confidential information.

That is not correct and Kindle will accept other formats. I don't think AOO is very good at creating HTML.

Google and you will quickly find many ways of creating Kindle files. Calibre is reportedly good.

Search the forum with kindle for more ideas.

I have successfully used Calibre to generate epub files in various formats direct from .odt files. However, my works have only been text ("book") format, so I cannot speak for its graphics handling.

Did you paste the JPGs into the Writer document - if so, this would have saved them as PNG files.

Convert the GIFs to JPG using an image editor. Edit the html to pick up the jpg files.

See [Tutorial] Some useful hints on using images for more information.

Your images cannot be JPGs.

When I create test.odt with text, a JPG and a GIF, and save it as an html, the JPG is saved as a JPG (and the GIF is saved as a GIF).

Be sure to read [Tutorial] Some useful hints on using images for a discussion on image formats and how AOO handles pasted compared with dragged or inserted images.
