[Solved] Legal document left margin line numbering

Post by ind »

Hello!

In some legal templates, there is line numbering in the left margin which is independent of the Tools -> Line Numbering feature. Maybe it is attached to the header? For example, the blank template at:

Can someone explain how this is done?

You ask for: lines of text;numbering
With lines of text;numbering you can find it in the help file.

You activate it with: menu --> Tools -->Line Numbering.
You get a popup with a help button.

Thank you for the reply, but Tools -> Line Numbering does not create the immutable left-margin line numbering.

A frame in the left margin, two top to bottom lines as the dividers, normal text in the main part of the page, and a top to bottom line on the right margin.

The "template" is not really a template file. It is a blank document. A template file is also basically that, but with a different filename extension, "ott", to signify that it should not itself constitute a document but rather be used as a "pattern" or "mold" for a new document.

Numbering in the margin is done by inserting a frame anchored to the page header.

The template is also somewhat lacking. It assumes that all content uses the default paragraph style. Nothing is done to adjust other styles (text body and heading styles should be, at the very least) so they follow the numbering.

I am not quite sure what limitations apply to a "legal document". If you use automatic numbering, it will follow the varying spacing caused by different styles. You can also set automatic numbering to show on every line. If you must have even line spacing to legally ensure document integrity, it is wise to adjust styles to suit the number spacing, so the document can be structured without causing trouble. With that, you can use either that frame in the margin for preset numbering (if numbering of entire sheet is mandatory) or automatic numbering, as required.

keme and RoryOF, thanks for the explanations. I understand what is being done in the document now.

Also, suggesting to create a style for consistency between the frame and main document is useful, keme.
