[Solved] Save New Word to Custom Dictionary

Post by EasyGoingPat »

(Libre Office Newbie Alert!)

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to add a new word to a custom dictionary?

Ideally, I'd like to be able to choose the dictionary I add the word to because I work on many different types of document and a word that makes sense in one domain may be incorrect in a different domain.

To give a concrete example, say I have a document created using a default dictionary of English UK and I add to this a custom dictionary called 'Computing'. If I right-click a word such as 'HDD', I'd like to be able to add this explicitly to the 'Computing' dictionary because this word (acronym actually) would be meaningless outside this domain.

Many years ago, Word (I'm guessing the 2003 version, before it got really crap) took this one step further. You could define a bunch of default dictionaries and for each document set the default dictionary to add new words to. To my knowledge, no other word processor since has had this simple yet incredibly useful feature.

Any help or advice would be gratefully received.

Kind wishes ~ Patrick

Did you try defining a custom dictionary (/Tools /Options /Language Settings : Writing aids, User-defined dictionaries, New) and then right clicking on your word(s)?

Well, now I feel stupid (and rightly so, I hear you say).

I did read the help and then check the dictionaries defined in menu you mentioned, but I assumed that because I was not getting a right-click choice for the ones already defined that I wouldn't get one for my own custom dictionary. That is outstanding and moves me one big step further from ever going back to the unmentionable 'W'.

Thank you!

PS - I promise to be less stupid in my next post!

As a relatively new poster you will find much useful information in the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials, the up to date Writer guide and the Writer Manual. May I suggest you bookmark the pages.

Press F1 to access the Help screen and search for your problem

The chapter headings in the manual are:

1 - Introducing Writer
2 - Setting up Writer
3 - Working with Text
4 - Formatting Pages
5 - Printing, Exporting, Faxing and E-Mailing
6 - Introduction to Styles
7 - Working with Styles
8 - Working with Graphics
9 - Working with Tables
10 - Working with Templates
11 - Using Mail Merge
12 - Tables of Contents, Indexes and Bibliographies
13 - Working with Master Documents
14 - Working with Fields
15 - Using Forms in Writer
16 - Customizing Writer – Keyboard shortcuts.

When a pop-up window opens, click the Help button for extensive help on that function - it is often more comprehensive than the manual.
