[Solved] Read error on a doc I've been working all day on

Post by alisun »

Hello!
I see others have had my problem: I was working on 3 docs when my computer crashed, but the only one with the error represents a whole day of intensive work. I tried following the tutorial but I don't think it applies to macs?

I'm stuck on step one: open with an archive manager. I can't find an archive manager that will open the file. I also tried the alternative of saving as a .zip file, but don't see the content file that is supposed to be visible to move on to step two.

Please help I'm on a deadline and

Many thanks!!!

You need to upload the file, but if it can't be opened as a zip, that is very bad. Perhaps you made a mistake, so post it here or on a file sharing site (Mediafire, google docs, etc) To upload here. click Post Reply and look for the Upload Attachment tab below the box where you type a response.

Hello!
Did you see the file?
I am very novice with computers and pretty new to this (old) mac, so hopefully it is just my mistake. Should I also attach the zip file or would that not be helpful?

Thanks in advance :-)

Always make backup copies of important files while you work on them!

Hello again,

I have one more question. How can I prevent that from happening again? It almost gave me a heart attack and I was thinking perhaps I should just buy word, but if I can prevent that happening maybe I'll try to stick with Open Office.

Thanks so much!

The error was associated with a comment. It is generally better to anchor comments to a single position in the document, not to a range of text. Most of the comments in this document do not cover a range, so that is good. I can't provide a guarantee that this or any software will not ever corrupt a document.

How can I prevent that from happening again?
I can provide the "timeStampBackup" extension for you. It can make a copy of your file with an actual timestamp in the file name at every clicking on the toolbar icon. The backup file will be stored in the Backups directory created by the Office suite. See the path of the Backups directory in the Tools - Options - Open/LibreOffice - Paths - ...
And you can redirect it to your favorit place on your HDD - if you want handle it in an easier way.

Please, edit the initial post in the topic: add the word [Solved] at the beginning of the subject line - if your problem has been solved.

Note that Zizi64's suggestion - which I totally agree with - will not stop it happening, but will ensure, if used regularly, that you have a recent backup to save your bacon.

And as you are using a Mac, you'll find the path setting for backups under OpenOffice | Preferences rather than Tools |Options. You may also find [Tutorial] Mac FAQ a useful resource.

Was the comment added by a user using MS Word? We often see this problem when .odt files are exchanged with MS Word users - we believe it is a bug in MS Word.

See [Tutorial] Differences between Writer and MS Word files for an explanation.

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

Try the attached. Turn off /Edit /Record changes. Can no one today write an article without multiple inputs?

Great thank you!
It's a multi-author article on a multi-year study that required a lot of collaboration so the multiple inputs is indeed required.

Thanks again!

The problem with recording changes is that the document is never brought up to date - every change, back to the beginning, is recorded. Surely a set of changes could be applied, and only the latest series recorded? Almost all errors of this sort seem to be coming from heavily edited documents - I haven't kept records, but that is my impression.

This tutorial might help you, depending on what error you are getting.
