Saving customized page margins as default for new documents?

Post by videobruce »

I asked this a few years ago and was told there wasn't a way to do this. I wonder if something has changed, as I don't see a way to do so. This is under 'Format/Page Style/Page'

I don't like the default page margins as they are excessive (except for the left margin) for my purposes. My work-a-round is to create a black "default .doc" with the margins I prefer to use, then open that up to create my document. It works but it's a pain to do so.

Is there or has anyone found a way to change the default margins?? :?:

I'm surprised this hasn't been a issue that received a solution. :(

You must vcreate a native, Internationale Standard fileformat TEMPLATE file (.ott) instead of the foreign, never standardized .doc file. Then you set it as DEFAULT TEMPLATE.

Are you trying to say M$ doesn't have their 'act' together??
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Ok, if I use a .ott, how much a issue with devoted M$ users would that be?

I just said: every software works best in its native fileformat/s/. When the native fileformat is an international standard, then the best choice: to use it.

The template file will be stored on your computer and need be seen by no-one else in the world. You will use it to create a new writer document on screen which you can then save in any format provided by AOO - although, as has been said many times on this forum, the native ODF (Open Document Format) is the best option.

Note that MS Office 2007 and later can read ODF files.

I was referring to using the OO format when sending a document to someone else. AKA compatibility. believe me, I'm no M$ fan, but realize those are by far the most used, at least in the US unfortunately. I surely don't like it when a file is sent to me I can't open or have to go thru hops to do so. It just happened from my Doctors office, some .xml file that is nothing but a document scanned from a fax. ;)

BTW, thanks again for your help.

How you can open a .txt file? With a free or cheap simple text editor/viewer software.

How you can open a PDF file? You just downloaded and istalled a free PDF reader software, and now you can do it.

How you can open an ODF file? Just download and install the FREE and opensource AOO/LO office suite...

How you can open a doc/docx file without series loosing of the formatting properties? You MUST BUY an expensive software... or you can open it with the AOO/LO - with some compromisses...

The diffrerent file formats never will have 100% compatibility. The .doc format never was standardized. The .docx standard (OOXML standard) has two main versions: the Transitiponal and the Strict ones. And the MS often changes the properties of the Transitional version without publishing any documentation...

Use the ODF file formats to store your IMPORTANT documents, and send a copy of converted document in a foreign fileformat if it is necessary.

I get that, I'm one of the last to buy "expensive software" especially if it comes from Washington State. Just a 2nd format to deal with. :(
