New version problems

Post by Psiclops »

I'm a beginner and have downloaded and installed the newer version to replace the earlier one.
I updated because it wouldn't read a Word document.
This new one doesn't read it either
I'm not even sure the new version is actually installed and working.
How can I check?
Do I have to ditch the old version first?
When I go into programs it tells me the 4.1 version is installed.
Totally confused! Please help.

Start any module of OpenOffice (from the Program button) and look at /Help /About OpenOffice; this will tell you the precise version and build installed.

Do you get any message, or what do you see, when you try to read your Word document?

I have opened Help and yes I do have the new version.
When I open the Word document the photos on it are there and the text headings but nearly all the other text is missing except for small patches of jumbled text and graphics overlaying each other.
Is there a way I can send a screenprint here or maybe the document itself?
Thanks

[Forum] How to attach a document here Note maximum file size is 128K. If your file is larger, use a file sharing site such as Mediafire. The link also contains information on how to anonymise your document if it contains confidential information.

If it is a Word (.doc or .docx) and not a Writer document (.odt), some differences in formatting are to be expected. For diiagnostics, the original document is best, rather than a screenshot of it.

For docx, LibreOffice seems to do better than AOO.
If no change, then just use MS Office. The .docx format (OOXML) was not designed to be compatible with anything else than MS Office.
