Bullets and numbering

Post by jtmosgoode »

Using small bullets on resume.
Every time I save my resume the TABS before and after the bullets is removed. Exporting to PDF works OK, but every-time I make changes I have to redo all bullets.
I've recreated complete resume from a text file with same results.
Using latest version does the same.

Greetings and welcome to the community forum!

What document format are you saving to? Saving to any format other than OOo's native ODF format (.odt for text) carries some risk of losing formatting. If you're not saving as ODF, try that and see if you still have a problem.

If you're already using ODF, what steps are you following to add the bullets?

Was saving as MS Word 6.0, changed all bullets to the large ones and removed all tabs before and after bullet.
Previously tested saving as ODT, failed. Saved as PDF OK.
New Test...
Saved as ODT, worked OK. Government doesn't use OpenOffice...wish they did.
Thanks for your time.

See [Tutorial] Differences between Writer and MS Word files for a discussion of what is happening, and for the reasons why you should always work in, and save files as .odt.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

If you've used the toolbar buttons, you can try to use list styles instead. Styles are better at keeping the bullets in .doc IIRC.
But beware that you may face other small glitches when exporting to .doc.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the edit button if your issue has been fixed.

Not all "MS Word" formats are well-supported. I believe the "Word 6" format is especially problematic.

Best practice is to work in ODF (save as .odt) and export a copy to .doc ("Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP") as needed for sharing. That MS Word format is much better supported and should export lists without major problems.

However, if you need to round-trip (everyone edits the file) documents with others working with MS Office, there's likely to be some problems, perhaps only minor ones. In that situation, it's best if everyone is using the same software, or as close as possible.
