OpenOffice spell check

My Spell Check is not working in Apache OpenOffice. Spell Check functions correctly in other programmes such as writing emails in OutLook.
Activating Spelling whilst writing this in OpenOffice Writer shows -
Text language shows: ABC(tick) English UK.
Suggestions for the first word of this text (My) are: Mac, BMP, MCs.
This problem started about a month ago, about the same time as Windows 10 updated & OpenOffice updated.
Most of this text in OpenOffice is underlined with wavy red.
What is going wrong & how do I get Spell Check working again?

Start with this topic which is found at the very top of the Writer section of the forum.

Clicked on 'this topic' link & followed script for 'Spell checker "red wriggly lines" - beta test fix'.
Good - Wriggly red lines have gone.
Bad - incorrectly spelt words are not highlighted with wiggly red lines.
What should I do now?

Please upload your ODF type sample document here (to check the settings in your document).

You might try reading the manual where you will discover what happens if you click this "red wriggly lines" icon. You may even be able to guess what it does.

You will find much useful information in the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials, the up to date Writer guide and the Writer Manual. When a pop-up window opens, click the Help button for extensive help on that function - it is often more comprehensive than the manual.

Also, please always search the forum before posting a query as the same questions (like your question about spell check) get asked and answered again and again and again and again ...

Thanks for the suggestion.
Due to my ignorance (this is the first forum I have ever used), how do I upload a document?
By ODF type sample document I assume you mean any ODF document I have generated.

What happened when you clicked the icon with the red wriggly lines?

USe the Post Reply button (but not the Quick Reply). You will found the "Upload attachment" TAb under the post edit box.

The max. file size is 128KiB in this forum, but you can share the larger files on a free file sharing service like the Google drive: put the link into your answer.

I hope, you use the native, International Standard ODF fileformats. (.odt, .ods, .odg, ...)

The Reply and Quote windows will have an Upload tab at the bottom of the window. The Quick Reply window does not. The forum will accept a file up to 128K. For anything larger, you should upload the file to a file hosting service such as Mediafire or DropBox and post the link here

Yes.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

Perhaps, in the same 'this topic' link, have a look at the suggestions in [Troubleshooting] Spell check in OpenOffice.

Your document works in my LibreOffice 5.3.6 and the portable AOO 4.1.3.

Ahh! That's the problem. It works on your system, not on mine.
Another thing I have just noticed.
In Tools>language 'thesaurus' is greyed out. Is that significant?
I have to go now but I will look for your advice much later.

But this tells us the problem is with your system and not a file problem so we have eleminated many, many, possible sources of the problem already.

I'd suggest having a look at Spell Check Not Working. The most likely cure is to reset the user profile.

I would doubt it.

My attached picture gives you more information about the details.

The Existing language name on Font TAB of the paragraph style settings means: A specific (existing) language is choosen for the paragraph. (There was such error in this forum: ANY language was not selected)

The little "ABC" icons before the language name on Font TAB of the paragraph style settings means: the Language tools (the spell chek tool, and the dictionary) for the selected language are installed and they work. If it not apperared in your AOO software, then the language pack is not installed, or damaged.
