Text layout changes using newer version

Post by woodworks »

hi,
I open a writer document saved on a mac in version 4.0.6.2 in ubuntu using version 4.2.8.2 and text is moved down on some pages.
text has 270 pages, so doing a manual correction is not an option.
any suggestions?
thanks

Page size change from A4 to US letter or contrariwise?

Also, in what format was the file saved?

I checke that A$ is A4 as well as all formats of headers, footers etc. all values match. exporting in odt format, pdf format, editable or non editable, even tried windows all the same, lines change. very strange. seems the mac 4.0.6.2 can not export well?

You may not have the same fonts in both OS.

Have you recently changed your version of Ubuntu? Did the file originate on another computer using perhaps a version of MS Word?

Usually a format change such as you report arises from different fonts being used. The font OpenOffice indicates on the formatting bar is the font requested; if this font is not available it is replaced by another font on that computer which OO thinks best matches that font. The TestFonts extension will show the fonts requested and the fonts used.

See [Solved] Tabs lost on file transfer for the reason(s). It has nothing to do with AOO, or even with a new version of AOO - it is because of the change from a Mac PC to a Ubuntu PC.

If this solves the problem, please view your first post in this thread and click the Edit button (top right in the post) and add [Solved] in front of the subject.

you are right on that, but that was not the reason. i just installed the missing font (times new roman) and still.
But i checked again and see that the problem already occurs on the mac. exporting the document to pdf on the same mashine moves the text when opening it on the mac in acrobat . so basically it allways goes wrong. it is like as if the document can only be opened correctly with oo 4.0.6.2

Have you restarted OpenOffice after installing the Times New Roman? OpenOffice only detects fonts on its startup, so if a font is installed while OO is open, it is not seen until the next startup of OpenOffice.

Try this on both PCs - it is Times New Roman. What does TesfFonts say about it?

Remember that the font showing in the Writer font drop-down selection box is the font the document is asking for. This may NOT be the font being used to create the display because, if the font being asked for is not installed on the PC, Windows (or other operating system) will silently substitute a different font which is available.

The TestFonts add-on is invaluable for finding missing fonts which the document is asking for, but which are not installed on the PC.

You can see which fonts are installed on the PC by Start > Control Panel > Fonts or by clicking C:\Windows\Fonts.
