As far as I can tell, there are eight options for outline styles in Open Office. Since none of them conforms to the format required by the Turabian/Chicago handbook I am stuck. Is there a way to make a custom style?
For the record Turabian requires:
I.
A.
1.
a)
(1)
(a)
i)
Each level is indented deeper than the level above it, but my indentations are removed in a forum format.
This is the way I was taught in school and have always considered the standard format for outlining. I have never understood why it isn't even an option in Open Office. I would have made it the default. However, perhaps I'm showing my age. I am old enough to automatically put two spaces after a period, after all.
My real question regards how to achieve this outline style in Open Office.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Re: Outline styles in Turabian format
The options on the "Outline" tab are just a few pre-packaged outline formats. You have full control over the format and layout of all ten list levels through the "Options" and "Position" tabs.
If you're doing a lot of work with outline lists, I strongly suggest spending a little time to get familiar with OO Writer's styles. Using a list style to manage the list format and layout consistently can save a lot of headaches. You can start out with the toolbar, set up all the options and position (indent) for each level, then use the "New style from selection" function to capture all the settings in a named list style.
Here's a sample document with your numbering captured in an outline style named "Turabian". You can copy all or part of the list to a new document and the style will be copied along with it.

You will find much useful information in the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials, the up to date Writer guide and the Writer Manual. When a pop-up window opens, click the Help button for extensive help on that function - it is often more comprehensive than the manual.
