Spell Checker Not Working

Post by Nova Neal »

All of the sudden the spell checker has stopped working.
How do I get it working again?

Hi, and welcome to the community forum. If you search for spell checker problems you would find many posts like yours.

Delete or rename your OpenOffice user profile.

In Windows do this by:

Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer (or Windows Explorer or whatever it is currently called). Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar (not the search engine) and press Enter. Delete or Rename the "user" folder. Start OpenOffice.

When you restart OpenOffice, you should be prompted for name/initials on next startup of OO.
RoryOF wrote: To prevent this happening again (or at least minimise the possibility of its recurrence), one should be leisurely in powering off the computer. As computers now cache data, but in software and hardware buffers, to appear to speed up their reaction, one must go through the formal shut down procedure for one's operating system, then wait until all disk activity has ceased before powering off. This only takes a few extra seconds, but even cumulatively, such extra seconds are very much less than the time to recover or rebuild a damaged file. Also, one should observe the USB device removal protocol, again waiting the few seconds until disk activity has ceased after the "you may now safely remove the device" message.

Thank you for the information.

This only works during one session.
When I close OpenOffice, then later open it again, the spell check isn't working.
I have to do this every time I open, OpenOffice to make the spell checker work again.

Isn't there a way to permanently correct this issue?

Thanks

Sounds like a wrong installation.
Are you sure to make install with admin privilege?

"Not working" is too general to provide a better answer. Please tell us why you think SpellCheck isn't working.

If you do not close down the computer using the correct power off or hibernate protocol, and wait a few extra seconds for all disk activity to cease, this can cause the spellcheck to fail, as OO may not have time to write its essential housekeeping information.

Do you create new files with right clicks from the file browser? If so, see the corner case 2 in this post.

By not working, i mean its not working at all.
If i misspell a word it's like there is no spell checker, it doesn't underline the misspelled word.
if i open the spell checker to check for misspelled words it doesn't find any, when there are misspelled words.
Even if I purposely misspell a few words, it doesn't find them.

I always shut down my computer like you are supposed to do. I never shut it off with the power button

Spell checker is working now.
But, it keeps switching from Canada English to United States English.
I have to stop and change it back at every paragraph.
Is there anyway to delete United States English from OpenOffice?

Thank You

Have you checked the settings of the paragraph style?

There's no reason to "delete United States English from OpenOffice". You need to change the default language for the document from English (USA) to English (Canada). Select Tools > Language > For all Text > English (Canada). That will change the language setting in the Default paragraph style. If you still have some text with the wrong language setting, then you may have some language settings applied using direct formatting. To remove the direct formatting setting from all text in the document, select Tools > Language > For all Text > Reset to Default Language. If you just want to remove the direct formatting setting from some of the text, select that text then select Tools > Language > For selection > Reset to Default Language
