[Solved] Capitalize first letter of any word: any shortcuts?

Post by irw »

I frequently use a keyboard combination in MS Word at work to change the capitalization of the current word thus: lowercase -> UPPERCASE -> Mixed-case.

Is it possible to do this in OpenOffice.org? I know i can go back to the beginning of the word and change the case / replace the letter, but my typing is such that I frequently need to correct errors, this being just one, and any short cut would be helpful!

I am aware o the "Capitalize first letter of every sentence" option, but this is different.

i did once find a set of macros to do this on the internet about a year or two ago, but am now unable to find it; however it was not very reliable when it did work.

Currently using OOo version 2.2 on Ubuntu.

You're going to need a macro for this--there's nothing built in.

I'm sure there is one (or more) macros around, but I don't know where you might find it.

There are two macros that will help, here: http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=28563

"Title Case"

There's another way to capitalize every word: Select your text and then from the menu: Format - Character - Format Effects - Effects and select "Title" from the pull-down menu. There are also selections for uppercase, lowercase and others.

But, be aware of two aspects.

o Using the Format Effects for Capital, lower or Title case does NOT change the actual character. It's not the same as typing a capital letter and then lowercase letters for each word. It's formatting, like applying bold or italic. It's lost if you save as a .txt file or copy/paste to something that doesn't recognize the format codes. Or use "Default Formatting".

o There IS another menu selection (format/change case) for uppercase or lowercase. That seems to change the actual character as if you deleted the old ones and re-typed the case desired. But, no option for title case is offered.

I guess there is use for both methods? I wish they'd add "title case" to the other one, too.

Or, to put it another way:
Capitalize first letter of any word - any shortcuts?
No.

Somebody published a CaseToggle-macro in the "old" forum. A single selection of text in Writer is processed like this:

I've had the same issue. I rely heavily on Word's Shift-F3. I know that Writer is not intended to be a Word clone, but this is one thing that Word does so well and that everyone uses. It's worthwhile Writer emulating the feature just to help Word users adjust. That's what MS did to get WordPerfect uesrs to switch, and it worked for them.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree - but we're just users here, no developers. You're preaching to the choir ;)

This is an old thread, but not marked as [resolved], so I give a way to get this shortcut.

Tools > Customize > Keyboard
Select SHIFT+F3 shortcut (upper left listbox)
Select OpenOffice MACRO category (lower left) > share > Capitalise
Select function "CapitalisePython" (lower middle)
And set it ("modify") to the shortcut selected.

Thank you, frame - your instructions make this an easy fix. [Resolved] should be marked.

It is NOT fully resolved frame.. Can u help me with this? Consider that I have performed mentioned steps and now I have statements "THIS IS THE TEST. TEST IS TO CHECK CASE." written in upper case. I want to change it fully as Title Case. Title case means "This is the test. Test is to check case". But on pressing F3 key by selecting the text, it is giving result as "This is the test. test is to check case". It means after full stop, it is not making first letter in caps.. Please help me As soon as possible..

Select each sentence separately, then apply the macro. Don't be so lazy!

For what its worth, I use Jan Goyvaerts' EditPad Lite for the conversion. Seems like an important thing to have in Open Office, tho.

Actually the target stated in the title of this thread is NOT RESOLVED by the CapitalizePython macro.
The request is for a shortcut to capitalize ALL the words of the sentence (aka Title Case), not just the first one.
CapitalizePython offer only the option to capitalize the first letter of the sentence, other then {lowercase} and {UPPERCASE}.

It is arguable if Title Case requires the capitalisation of _all_ words in the sentence. It is not unusual for the minor words such as articles and prepositions within the title to be left uncaptialised. For the relatively few instances when one needs this, is it not better to do the task by hand and get it right according to whatever criterion one is using?

Why don't you create character styles with the case you want and apply it with a shortcut?

Well, I tried, and that what lead me to the issue discussed in the forum thread at http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/ ... =7&t=40314.

And, following your recommendation, further lead me to report this bug: http://openoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=117895.

Thanks!
