[Solved] Where is Rx Symbol?

Post by myweb »

Hello! Does Open Office contain the symbol Rx that doctors use? If so how do I access it?
Thanks much and God Bless!

This is Unicode symbol U+211E; whether it is present or not depends on the fonts installed, not on OpenOffice. It is present in some fonts, not in others. A quick check across a range of fonts suggests it is often not present.

The DejaVu font family is present in the installer pack of the LibreOffice (and will installed automatically, when you install the LO).

I was in error: the symbol may not show up in /Insert /Special character (my earlier posting was based on this), but if one uses
the appropriate shortcut to insert a Unicode character then it will appear, if it is included in the font. On a linux system, in OO Writer I type Ctrl Shift u 211e and on pressing Enter the character appears.

This is a problem with the design of OO's special character dialog: it works according to the old model, where a character was associated with a particular font, so it requires you to select a font, and it inserts both the character and the font information in the document.

With the standard, Unicode model, all that's needed is the character. OO will display the character in the current font if possible; if the character is not available in the current font, OO will search for a font that does provide it. If NO font on the system provides it, then you get a missing glyph box in its place.

When you find a font with the Rx symbol, you can use AutoCorrect to type Rx easily. Go Tools > AutoCorrect Options > Replace. Type %%R (or something similarly memorable but unlikely to be used normally) in Replace and paste the Rx symbol into With. Every time you type %%R it will automagically get changed to Rx.
Edit: For the above to work you need to be typing in a font which contains the Rx character.

If you want to use a different font for your typing then record trivial macro where you set the font to one which contains the Rx character and type it. You now reset the font back to the usual font. Save the macro and assign an icon to the macro and put it on a toolbar. Now, whenever you want Rx just click the icon.

See [Tutorial] How to record a macro (and Regular Expressions)
If this solves the problem, please click the Edit button on your original post and add [Solved] in front of your subject.

Zizi64's link says that Rx (presumably Px as it means Prescription take) is only available in the following fonts:
Edit: I stand corrected - it is an abbreviation for recipe.

℞ is a symbol meaning "prescription". It is sometimes transliterated as "Rx" or just "Rx".

This symbol originated in medieval manuscripts as an abbreviation of the Late Latin verb recipe, the imperative form of recipere, "to take" or "take thus".
