Hi,
I have a project involving 13,000 pages, divided into pdf files of roughly 100 pages each. These are all saved in a local folder. I need to be able to refer quickly to specific pages, for example Document 32, at page 63. I have managed to insert hyperlinks to the pdf documents I want, but they just open at whichever page I was last looking at, which is unhelpful. Does anybody know how I can make the hyperlink open the document at the page I want? I use Mac's built-in Preview to open the pdf files.
Cheers
P

Re: Hyperlink to specific page in local pdf document
Hi and welcome to the forum!
After a quick search on the Net, it seems that the only way is to hard code the path to the reader and to the document. I've not tried but it doesn't seem relevant for a document that may be opened on another machine.
I've tried the #page=x string but it doesn't work.

Check the docs for your pdf viewer; it may have some way to specify a page to open at.
As far as I know, the only method that works across different viewers is to build named link targets (aka bookmarks) into the pdf file. OO Writer can do this automatically, for headings, but not for pages (as far as I know).

Whether a PDF opens at the beginning or at the last read position is, I think, a function of the reader, or possibly an option selected by the author on creating it. You could experiment with the reader settings and preferences, and possibly try making the PDFs READ ONLY as nothing in them can then be changed by opening them.
If you can force the PDF always to open at Page 1, and if there aren't too many pages at which you need to open each PDF, you could split each PDF into separate PDFs (use PDFSAM) where those pages are the first pages of the split PDF. Now refer to the specific PDFs. Googling open pdf at beginning gets many hits.

| Edit: Is there a command line action where you can force the reader to open the PDF at that page - something like the pseudo-command "acrobat_reader.exe fred.PDF 7" to open it at page 7 |

Thanks for the replies!
I have split a few of the pages I need to refer to into their own pdf files, which I think is the only reliable solution.

If the file names and last read positions are stored in the PDF reader configuration file (a .INI file?) can you edit the file to force it to open at the page you want?John_Ha wrote: ... and possibly try making the PDFs READ ONLY as nothing in them can then be changed by opening them.
Or re-instate a default .INI file with that data missing in a batch file run immediately before you open the reader.

This reason is that you try to open a local PDF.Hagar Delest wrote:I've tried the #page=x string but it doesn't work.
The url links with #page=x or #mycustomdestination only work on http and https located PDFs.
https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/link ... robat.html
http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/ ... meters.pdf
So eg. your Browser PDF-Reader plugin should open the above PDF at page 5:
