[Solved] Dot above a number

Post by Salut »

Dear Open-Office community :D ,

I am writing a scientific text with OpenOffice Writer and now I would like to include some partially rounded numbers. To inidicate that a number has changed by rounding you can draw a line beneath or above the respective number and if it has not changed a dot above the number.

While the line can easily be managed by an underscore, I do not know how to get a dot above a number. I tried to find something in the special character section, but then the dot is hardly recognizable :? . I also tried to create something with superscript, but that does not work as well.

Is there anyone who has an idea how to manage this?

Thank you very much in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

Try googling dot above number. I quickly found Superimposing characters which is for MS Word. However, Insert > Special characters ..., has both Combining Diacritical Marks and Combining Diacritical Symbols.

When I tried placing the dot in Combining Diacritical Marks (U+0307) above a digit it did not go high enough ...

Traditionally people find LaTex excellent for scientific and mathematical documents. Also check out Math Guide - V3.3 at OOo v3.3 Writer Manual.

There is always the workaround of creating an image of a dot and placing the image above the digit, with Wrap set to In Background and Anchor set to To character. It's a bit clunky but it does what you want if nothing else works.

If this solves the problem, please click the Edit button on your original post and add [Solved] in front of your subject.

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

With Math formula :

Code: Select all

3,412bar5
for the bar above

Code: Select all

3,41dot2
for the dot above.

The only thing is that the last number seems to have a greater spacing...
