Greetings and welcome to the community forum!

So ... what sort of watermark, specifically?

What do you have to start with?

Should it appear on every page, or just the cover page?

Simplest case, you have an image for the watermark: Format > Page > Background > As: graphic; select your image; OK

I would like to use words if at all possible. I would like it to appear on every page of my contract.

It would be nice if there was a simple "text as page background" feature, but there isn't. You have to do it yourself.

I would use OO Draw to create the graphic:

File > New > Drawing

Click the text tool (bottom toolbar, "T") Enter the text.

Set the font, size, color, whatever. For text on an angle, click the rotate tool (arc arrow, 3 or 4 from the right) then drag any corner of the text object.

Once you have that done, save the Drawing (just in case), then File > Export > Format: EMF; click "Export"

In the text document, Format > Page > Background > As: Graphic; select the exported file, OK
 Edit: PS:
If you need some help, just tell us what text you want. It won't take a minute to make the graphic for you--in fact, here's one ("Draft") you can use. Download the attached file and select it as the Format > Page > Background graphic. You may have to type the file name exactly: watermark.txt since Writer doesn't show files ending in .txt.
 Edit: PPS:
Sorry, you'll need a current version of OO to use that file (it's actually an SVG graphic). I don't think it will work if you're still using OO 3.3.

hi Acknak, I also wanted a watermark and I followed your instructions for a watermark graphic but it just puts it on the page as a picture but there is no way to make it a watermark.

Did you note acknak's remark that his method only works for the current version of OpenOffice (OO 4.1.1)?
Your .sig shows you are using OO 3.2.

The instructions I gave above will work with any version of OO. But make sure you're going through Format > Page > Background ...

If you use Insert > Picture and then put it in the background, it will just be a picture on one page.

Alternatively, you can use Insert > Picture ... IF you anchor the image to the page header (or footer). That will allow the image to appear on each page.

The steps for using the file are given in the post(s) above.

Save the attached file somewhere you can find it again.

Open your OO Writer document: File > Open > ...

Format > Page > Background > As: Graphic ...

click "Browse" and select the downloaded watermark file.

Set Type: Area to fill the page with the graphic.

OK

Here's a Writer document with the "Draft" page background:

If it is to be printed, then print the watermark on the paper first. Now print the content on the "watermarked" sheets of paper.

I just installed LibreOffice and it is : Version: 5.0.1.2 (x64)
Build ID: 81898c9f5c0d43f3473ba111d7b351050be20261
Locale: en-US (en_US)

I was able to create the drawing and save it. But when I started to follow the steps to
Open your OO Writer document: File > Open > ...

Format > Page > Background > As: Graphic ...

There is no option / tab for Background.

I attached a screen shot of the information I get when I open the file select format and then page.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so Very much

The instructions given were for OpenOffice. LibreOffice 5 seems to be different. Perhaps the facilities required are on the Area tab.

If you edit your post subject to include LibreOffice you might get someone with LO expertise responding.

You cold also post on the LO Web site.

In AOO, the selection box offers either colour or graphic.

I suggest you check all the tabs, especially the Area tab as Rory suggests, and the Borders and Transparency tabs.

Hi guys, I ran into this topic when I was searching for the same thing. Format>Page>Background was available in LO 4 series. Now it is bit changed. I've come up with this. I know it's not a good one but right now I could manage only this. If there is any other method, please tell me too.

Create an image file of watermark as suggested above. Go to Insert>Media>Fontwork Gallery. Double click some random font work (You can delete it later). Right click and select Area. Go to Bitmap option. There is import button. Click on that and get your image file. Enter some name and store it. Now you can delete font work.
Now go to Format>Page>Area>Fill Bitmap. You can find the stored image there. Click on it and press OK. You'll get the watermark.

There is an option in Format>Page>Area>Fill Bitmap to Import graphic. But it is not working.

I hope this helps... :) :)

EDIT 1: I'm sorry guys. It seems I made a mistake here. There is no option to import graphic in Format>Page>Area>Fill Bitmap in LO 5.0.0.5.

I am running Libre Office Version: 5.0.2.2 (x64)
Build ID: 37b43f919e4de5eeaca9b9755ed688758a8251fe
Locale: en-US (en_US)

I only need one specific watermark for multiple files so first I needed to create a bitmap and I found that to create a text bitmap I needed to go to
DRAW > TEXT BOX > FONTWORK GALLERY (ICON NEXT TO TEXT BOX)
DBL CLICK ON FONTWORKS AND THEN ERASE IT AND ENTER THE TEXT I WANTED AND HIT ENTER
SELECT A COLOR FROM THE AREA OPTIONS ON THE RIGHT

THEN SELECT POSITION AND SIZE (LOCATED UNDER THE COLOR OPTIONS ON RIGHT) AND TRANSPARENCY

CLICK ROTATION FROM THE BOX THAT POPS UP AND SELECT THE ROTATION

POSITION THE TEXT AND THE CLICK FILE > EXPORT AND EXPORT AS .GIF TO THE LOCATION YOU WISH TO SAVE IT TO. I saved the file to a location easy for me to find.

Which looks like the same thing that eager_worm is doing

Now when I need to add that watermark to a document I created I am able to select
Format>Page>Area>Fill Bitmap to Import the graphic. It would appear that the import option is working with the version of Libre Office I am using.

Yeah.. It's working in 5.0.2.2. Just tried now. I'll check with 5.0.0.5 again.. May be it didn't work only with EMF files. :D

Hello "eager_worm",

What's your printer?

My overview concerning the current printer supply is surely not complete. Judged from the many printers I used in course of time, I can say that most of them came with a watermark feature of their own. (Because of their specific limitations many ink printers won't, I am afraid.)

Working on a office (AOO, LibO, MS surely as well) you can adjust the printer settings. Now for 'Apache OpenOffice' e.g.: Going > 'File' > 'Printer Settings...' you get a dialogue from which you can choose an installed printer first.

To be more precise, what you actually choose is a printer driver (The printer itself may not be connected, or may even be virtual like one of the "pdf printers" "printing" into a pdf file, we know.) The OpenOffice 'Printer Settings...' dialogue will give you access to the settings dialogue which came with the printer driver and wich therefore knows every detail about the printer, in specific if, and in what way, it supports watermarks.

My current standard printer is a little Kyocera FS 1030D for private use (at least 10 years old, I think). It supports watermarks as a matter of course.

The respective settings are saved with the document. You needn't be afraid your mature documents print marked 'DRAFT'. After all the editing you simply switch off the watermark via the printer driver dialogue.

(The watermark is visible neither in the document under editing nor in the print preview, but only in the actual printout.)

Hi, our printer model is SAVIN 8035E PCL6. Yeah, there is watermark feature too. I use that often. But sometimes we do need watermark in soft copy documents also... :)
