[Solved] Writer 4.1 crashes using Edit file on read only odt

Post by John_Ha »

When I open a Read only odt file, Writer opens it successfully with the tag (Read only) in the window titlebar. I then click the Edit File icon and, as expected, Writer shows a pop-up window saying the document cannot be edited, possibly due to limited access rights, and and do I want to edit a copy of the document. All good so far ...

I click Yes, and Writer crashes. Resetting my profile did not fix it.

The error also occurs when I click on an odt file attached to a Thunderbird email. As soon as I press Edit file, Writer crashes.

Steps to re-produce.

1 Create a test.odt file. r-click it > Properties > tick Read only
2 Double click test.odt to open it in Read only mode
3 Click the Edit file icon (5th from left, to the left of the PDF icon). Writer crashes.

Re: Writer 4.1.0 crashes when using Edit file on read only o

Post by John_Ha »

I hate it when I answer my own posts - I obviously didn't do enough research the first time.

The Thunderbird problem was caused by my being on a back level of Thunderbird (24.6.0, despite being set up to receive updates automatically - I am now on 31.0).

Strangely, that fixed the Writer problem when opening a Read only file on the desktop!!!

If I now repeat the test sequence in my first post, Writer opens the Read only odt file without crashing.

Bizarre, but true - upgrading Thunderbird fixed a problem in AOO. Something else must have happened somewhere but I have no idea what.
