[Solved] Paragraph formatting does not save

Post by windowshater »

Hi, the closest match in search is this thread, yet it has nothing to do with my problem report here.

OO Overall is a Great product, no doubt here! I just stumbled upon an issue that I'd like to share with the community, maybe you got it too, just didn't post it yet... ;-)

=> When a headline auto-breaks into the next line, OO continues the headline with an indent. No problem, you go to Format > Paragraph, and zero-out the Before-Text and First-Line indents (whether you tick Automatic or not doesn't make a difference for this purpose). You save the file and expect the indent to be gone.
However, you open the file, and the indent is back! Magic!

I have replicated this issue many times, with all sorts of variations, but the zeroed-indent never gets saved with the file. (as heads-up, I have loads of client .docs, I need to continue saving them in doc format).

Anyone noticed the same issue, and found out how to solve it?

I am happy for you, you are lucky :P
Not least because you're still on the only windows they ever built that was reasonably safe to use: XP. :bravo:
Not sure if that alone is your luck with saving the format indent setting, but you can trust an old man here: It doesn't get saved. :-(

I can't reproduce and I'm on Ubuntu.

Have you tried working in .odt and then saving to .doc or PDF when you need to send the file to someone else?

I've just tried this on OO 4.1 on Windows XP. Using /Format /Paragraph the indent returned after reopening the doc file. Using /Format /Styles and Formatting the indent didn't return.

[SOLVED] Error? Paragraph formatting does not save - did you

Yeah Rory, you are right! Thank you :bravo:

So, to summarize for others who stumble: What OO seems to save is the style, not the paragraph setting. To get your desired paragraph settings saved, you must edit the style!

Just so we're all on the same page:

I see the problem when saving as .doc.

If I save as ODF (.odt) the Format > Paragraph setting is saved/restored correctly.

I don't see any bug report for this; I'll see if I can put something together.

PS: Is anyone else noticing that the indent markers in the ruler don't work for the headings? The ruler always shows Before text/First Line as zero.

I saved as doc on a Windows XP machine. The /Format /Paragraph modifications to the indent did not save (they were gone when the file reopened), Modifications using /Format /Styles and formatting did save. I'll try later today on a different Windows machine.

I'm also on Windows 8.1 and I do see the problem. AOO 4.1.0 is saving the zero indents, but doesn't seem to apply them when the document is reopened if the paragraph style is set to an outline level in Tools > Outline Numbering. When the document is opened with LO, the indents are zeroed.

Instead of setting the indents to zero by direct formatting of the paragraph, set the indents to zero in the paragraph style.

Filed bug reports:

Issue 125136: Ruler markers do not reflect actual settings for heading paragraphs

Issue 125137: Direct formatting indents for heading paragraphs are not exported to .doc

Good point!

I see the same here.
