OpenOffice Crashing, Running EndNote

Hi there,

I was running open office 4.01, Windows 7, and EndNoteX6.
All of a sudden my open office was crashing when i was trying to insert citations, edit citations, or edit bibliography. I would get the message "due to an unexpected error, open office crashed. all files you were working on will be saved now. the next time open office is launched, your files will be recovered automatically"
When i open the recovered document the bibliography is in place,the citation appears as such, for an example {Liptak, 2014 #21}.

I found a forum stating that it could be to do with internet explorer and that I should get back to internet explorer 8...which i did...still the same.

I have searched my internet options for "graphic driver acceleration" as noted in this forum... viewtopic.php?f=15&t=42534&hilit=intern ... er#p196136 --but do not have that option.

I then was told that I needed to reset my user profile....which I did...still not working.

Any other HELP would be GREATLY appreciated. I have massive deadline to meet and I am unable to do anything with this hangup.

You say that resetting the profile didn't work so I am a bit stumped as I cannot think what is happening. There are, I think, two routes to explore

1 Is it a fault in the document? Does it happen with other documents? Do a nice clean open/save - open the document, type a space, and save the document - you know then that ther document is as good as it ever will be. Also, are you saving as an odt file? It is best to use odt and not doc etc.

2 Is it a fault with your instance of AOO? You have reset the profile - can I now suggest that you un-install AOO, and re-install it as this may cure it. You will not lose any AOO settings etc, so this should be fairly painless. Your signature says you are running 4.0.1 which has now been updated to 4.1.0.

I very much doubt that Internet Explorer or graphics accelerator are causing it. I would suggest upgrading IE8 to the latest IE (or, better still, replace it with Firefox as IE8 is probably a security risk.

One thought - are there any redundant AOO processes running?. Close AOO. Run TaskManager by ctrl/alt/del > Start TaskManager, and stop any soffice.bin and soffice.exe, writer.exe processes. Now restart AOO.

... and on Windows, a reboot often solves a problem (and will kill any redundant AOO processes).

You might find googling openoffice endnote helps. I quickly came up with Missing citations in Open Office which recommends using odt and not doc extension, and also suggests getting a "clean" document by:

I have had similar problems, including OpenOffice crashing repeatedly, even when using a .odt file. A number of other solutions has helped at different times.
1) Copy the text into a new, blank document and reformat the citations.
2) Unformat the citations and then Format the bibliography again.
