That did not work either. Any others possible suggestions?

One thing I cannot understand is that OpenOffice does not write .docx format, so are you sure that OpenOffice was used to create the document?

If you have OpenOffice, and you write some text using Writer, you can save it as a .doc file; as a .odt file; or as a PDF file (as well as other file formats). People should be able to read those files.

If you could upload a file - it doesn't have to be your CV, just another file people say they cannot open would do - someone here could have a look at it.

Could you describe in detail how you created your .doc file. And how you created your .docx file.

The attached file is a "Composite Document File V2 Document" which OpenOffice is not able to produce.
Anyhow, I can open that file with LibreOffice, OpenOffice, AbiWord and MS WordViewer.

It was originally created with word not open office. I just downloaded it and saved it in open office as a doc and docx file. Could that be why?

Maybe I am wrong, but AFAIK MS Office doc and xls, as well as Windows Thumbs.db, are all CDFs. LibreOffice Writer can save doc files, that are reported as CDF V2 by unix and cygwin file utility.

Nothing odd in the files alone. Can't open while downloading -- the reason could be MIME type info sent by server + desktop configuration?

I can open all the files you have posted, including the doc and the docx from your brother's website.

Have a look at the file below - can you download and open it?

What version of OpenOffice are you using? See Help > About OpenOffice
It was originally created with word not open office. I just downloaded it and saved it in open office as a doc and docx file. Could that be why?
No - that should have no effect.
Also does Open office have a mail program, I did not see one.
You can email a document you have open by File > Send > Document as email.

yes I was able to open it. Is it possible because the documents weren't originally created in open office, that could be why?
