[Solved] Deleting solid horizontal line?

Post by RhinoCan »

I'm not quite sure what is going on but I've just created a solid horizontal line that I can't delete.

I wanted to separate two sections of a document and wrote a string of consecutive dashes the entire width of the page, then pressed Enter. Magically, the line of dashes turned into a solid black (horizontal) line. That was probably a good thing since that was actually what I wanted to have. So I copied it into various parts of the document where I wanted solid lines. But I copied one too many and want to delete one of these solid lines.

But I'm darned if I can figure out how to get rid of it again. I've tried selecting the whole line, backspacing, and using the delete key but the line seems determined not to disappear.

What's the technique to get rid of this line and why isn't it a little more intuitive?

I didn't quite follow your suggestion at first: I wasn't quite clear on what to do once I got to Format/Paragraph/Borders tab. Once I went to the User-defined area on the right and clicked on the dotted line that apparently represents the bottom border then clicked OK, I found that the solid line was gone. I'm just explaining that here for posterity in case someone else has the same issue down the road and finds your instructions a bit cryptic :D

I have to say I still find it a bit unexpected that OOO would automatically assume that a string of dashes should turn into a solid line. Making it a border for the paragraph is also unexpected but I suppose it had to be part of the document model somewhere and that's as good a place as any.

Thanks for the assistance!

You're not alone: it confuses a lot of people, me included. I suspect it confuses almost everyone who stumbles onto it.

I don't know about this one, but some dubious design decisions in Writer come straight from copying what MS Word does (or used to do).

Here's the most relevant open issue (there are several concerning aspects of this "feature" as you might imagine):
Issue 59581: Automatic horizontal line behaviour unfriendly, line almost untouchable

This issue has been lingering since 2005 and STILL not resolved? Yikes!

For the record, I don't see this as that big a deal, especially now that I know how to deal with it but I tried to vote anyway. It didn't like the login/password, even though I gave it the same ones I use here on the forum. I've already got too many IDs and don't really want to create yet another one to vote on this relatively minor issue....

So you see why there's no priority in fixing it ;-)

Yes, the site registrations are completely different.
