[Solved] File corrupted (opened by accident with abiword)

Post by tehol »

Hello,

So I'm not sure exactly what went wrong... I was writing an essay as a .doc from LibreOffice, and then realised that I should split the essay in two. So I quickly created a new .odt with the information I wanted to handle separately. Later, I decided to return to this file, and I clicked it to open. It opened with AbiWord! Not my intention, though the file was there in full. I closed it, then opened it immediately after right clicking and changing the default open software to Libre Office. Then I opened it again, and the file was clearly damaged. I could see parts of my introd, and parts of my conclusion, but the rest was all in overlapping mixed up weird form. I tried right-clicking and clicking "extract here", but it said it wasn't recognised.

Anyone able to help? I really like the material I had written, even if it still needed a lot of work.. I've attached the file...

EDIT: Solution: the other fellow below could read my file, he reposted it for me.

Granted, the formatting is a little strange but the document seems ok to me.

It's about 1.5 pages of text--is that right?

I wish! Could you open that and send me the text? I'll post a screenshot of what I see

EDIT: Image

EDIT2: Please! Pardon my earlier lack of manners, I was just really excited when you said that. It may by short, but I did put some time into it

Thank you so much! That appears to have recovered all of it!

The "corruption" is caused by the line spacing setting. The "corrupted" paragraphs in the original document have a 50% proportional line spacing instead of "single" line spacing. Changing the line spacing back to single should fix it.

I'm new here. Does anyone know how I can fix a corrupted odt. file. It's nothing but pound symbols.

G'day, and welcome to the community forum.

Please see [Tutorial] The Dreaded Pound Signs: file reduced to ####. Odds are that your document is not recoverable as is, but you may be able to recover something from your hard drive using the methods in the linked post.
Cheers

See [Tutorial] How to find and un-delete Writer temporary files for detailed instructions on how to recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was when it was last saved with AutoRecovery.

You may also find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which have since been deleted.

There are also detailed instructions for how to un-delete the temporary files Writer wrote while you were editing the file, and then deleted - this will recover your file as it was when you last opened or you last saved it.

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.
