[Solved] eBook publishing from .odt

Postby tays01s » Wed May 01, 2013 9:02 pm

I sell an eBook as a pdf but this and the DRM software doesn't allow use with many popular eBook readers.

Assuming the .odt file is ~300 pages, has lots of figures, cross-references, internal and external hyperlinks, is there a way be getting an compatible with major eBook formats without having to majorly reconstruct the current file.

A most useful standalone application which can read and convert native OpenOffice files into almost eery ereader format, allowing them to be fine tuned in the process, is Calibre. This also handles the library of books installed on most ereaders.

Thanks I'll check the links, and I'd noticed a previous post mentioning Calibre. However, the latter warns you that it's fine for a user importing to an eBook but not if you're intending to sell it. I presume by this it means there would be too many glitches to be commercially viable.

That may be simply to cover any possible liability for the application's author. I found it quite satisfactory on the few occasions I used it.

Are the above extensions equally likely to work with LO?

Just try.
Since the code is still rather similar, it may work.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the edit button if your issue has been fixed.

I've tried out several of the suggestions + some others including OO plugins. The result, for an odt file containing lots of figures, use of drawing and tables, is a right mess. with 3x the page number, drawing arrows missing, figs in the wrong place and tables completely messed up. My impression is that conversion isn't too bad if you have simple text and a some figs anchored to paragraphs. Complexity kills it.

Perhaps it's best to start from Epub software? If so, it's a right pain to have to start from scratch again.
