i use the pointed inbetween 2 letters, highlights whole lett

I have openoffice and how come when i use the pointer it highlights a letter, instead of inbetween the letters
for example, if i have the word "dogs" and i want to insert a letter, i can't because the point would highlight the letter, and i can't go inbetween a letter
how do i fix this?

You have entered edit mode "overwrite". Press the Insert (or Ins) key on your keyboard, or click the edit mode indicator (field labeled OVER) on the status bar. The edit mode should change to "insert" (edit mode indicator changes to INSRT, and the text marker is a vertical line again).
