[Solved] "Save" button grayed out

Post by laceymike »

[Solved] Loved Writer for years but this afternoon it wouldn't "Save" edited files. The 'Save' button is grayed out. The "Save As" button was fine so I used it to save my copy. I tried just opening a file and saving it immediately and without changes. Same result - no "Save".

I uninstalled OO and downloaded and installed a new version. Same thing. So, I ceased all security and tried it a third time and I'm still having the same problem. The "Save" button is still grayed out. I'd sure appreciate some assistance on this problem.

Thank you very much in advance.

Have you tried to reset your OpenOffice user profile?

Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Is the file "Read-only" perhaps. If so click the Edit button.

Thank you, Tom, but the files are not 'Read Only'.

Hagar, Writer has worked so well for me that I haven't needed to look into any 'fixes' before. Please tell me where I can find information about 'resetting' my profile. Didn't even know I had a profile!

Very many thanks to both of you for getting back to me.

Information on the User profile is at
Tutorial: the User Profile

Every separate user who logs on to your computer under a different user name to use OpenOffice has an OpenOffice profile automatically generated for them; this contains all their customisation, including specialised templates and dictionaries. By deleteing or renaming your profile, OpenOffice is caused to generate a new default profile on next start of OpenOffice. This cures a large proportion (~90%) of OpenOffice peculiarities.

I found the literature you directed me to. Thank you. I attempted to rename "user" to "user.old" and was told that "a file or folder in it is open in another probgram". I have closed all OO writer programs, deleted the icon from my screen removed the icon and all of the options from the 'Start" menu. Also in the Start menu, All Programs, was OpenOffice 3.1 and OpenOffice 4, both empty. I deleted OpenOffice 4 ok but when I try to delete OpenOffice.org 3.1 it won't let me saying I need to have administrator privileges. I do. It's my computer and I'm the only user. I use administrator privileges but can usually right click on an item and choose "Run as Administrator". Not in this case. have no idea where else I could look.

Thanks again for your help and any ideas would be appreciated. I don't want to try to re-install again if the system isn't ready for the installation.

Again, thank you.

Hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc and in the task manager, kill any soffice.bin process you see.

Hi Hagar,

Sorry to have not said it but that is also something I did. I had two instances of soffice.bin running and deleted both of them. Can you think of any other suggestions?

Again, thank you very much.

Hi Hagar!!!!!!!!

I rebooted and was able to rename the "user" file to "user.old". Finally. Now, I'll get on to re-installing the software.

Thank you so very much, Hagar. Now I'll get back to the original issue. I will mark this issue as [Solved] if the re-install fixes the problem.

Again, thank you very much.

It's all good now. I'll see if it stays that way but I really appreciate your persistence and knowledge, Hagar. Thank you again.
