[Solved] Could not connect to the outgoing mail server

Postby joejac » Mon Nov 26, 2012 5:19 pm

Last year I was able to manage a Writer template to send my yearly email to my customers, it worked fine. The email has variables connected to their corresponding data in a Worksheet registered in the OpenOffice Database. Everything worked fine with OO 3.3 but yesterday I was trying with same parameters and same Gmail Account and it did not work.

1. In OpenOffice.org Writer Tools - Options - OpenOffice.org Writer - Mail Merge E-mail.
I get this error:
"OpenOffice.org could not connect to the outgoing mail server. Check your system's settings and the settings in OpenOffice.org. Check the server name, the port and the secure connections settings".
I used smtp.gmail.com as the outgoing server port 587 (also port 465)
SSL - SMTP Server requires authentication is checked, with the gmail email and correct password, like it was last year.
These are the proposed Gmail values, and Gmail account has POP and IMAP enabled, I have Win 7.

2. Then I downloaded and Installed OO 3.4.1 and updated Java to the latest version, and same problem, I checked the firewall and Java, OO.org OO Writer and OO Base are allowed.

3. Then I moved the files to a Linux PC and test them with Libre Office and even worst, no connection with internet, but Firefox is connecting fine.

I do not understand, if everything was working fine in November 2011 and I have the emergency of sending the email no later than tomorrow :(

Hope someone can help.
Best regards

Re: Mail Merge E-mail-OO not connect to the outgoing mail se

I use "smtp.googlemail.com" as the outgoing server. Could that be your error?

I've been trying to use merge E-mail myself, but this is as far as I get. I haven't been able to find the procedures to follow to insert fields in both the address and in the message proper. Any chance you could point me in the right direction?

Thanks loucherry,

Unfortunately with "smtp.googlemail.com" did not work either, and this do not comply with gmail instructions, please see this:

With regard to your question here are the links that helped me:

Sorry for my delay, but I had to find other alternatives, I solved the problem with Gmail and Google Docs with a public script, in case you or somebody need this, I provide the links.

1.- Firefox Extension: Mailmerge, it looks very good, but I do not like to use the browser for tasks different than browsing
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunde ... ail-merge/

2.- How to Mail Merge in Gmail, this is the one I used, I do not like because it forced me to depend on a web service and I prefer solutions in my desktop not on the web, but it is easy and fast for a temporary solution:

3.- Other Links:

Hope this can help

For the record: The Spirit of Discordance. Presenting "TVHGoogleMAPI", an Apache-license open source project that makes GMail a registered "Simple MAPI" protocol handler on Windows.
AOO 4.1.6 on Xubuntu 19.04 and 4.1.5 on Windows 7 (with winPenPack port).
