Ok I have been using open office for a while now. I save things in XP format and have never had any troubles. Now in the middle of a doc I am writing I have noticed that the auto spell check is no longer working. I had the Doc do a spell check from start with no errors even though I KNOW some things were intentionally misspelled. I checked the settings as best I could and used default formatting which fixes the trouble for a word or two then its messed up again.
Any idea why this has suddenly become a problem. I upgraded today to 2.4 and still have the same trouble.

Re: Spell Check suddenly not working
I had a similar problem when I started using "English (Australia)" as my default language. If you select a language for which there is no spell-checking dictionary, spell check stops working. Note that this is a per-character setting, and it's on the Format->Character->Font panel, under Language. Try this: Open your document, go CTRL-A (select all), select Format->Character->Font and under Language chose a language with a "tickABC" icon next to it. If this is your problem, you'll see red lines appear again under your spelling mistakes.
If this solves your problem, make sure you've got a default language with a spellcheck dictionary selected in Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages->Default language for documents, so that spell checking works with your new documents. Also, check your Character styles in the organiser to make sure none of them specify a language for which no spell check dictionary exists.
Cheers,
Graham

For what it's worth, OpenOffice.org has new, slightly-easier ways to change the language for spell check.greyham wrote:Note that this is a per-character setting, and it's on the Format->Character->Font panel, under Language. Re: Spell Check suddenly not working
Thanks guys some how the Doc ended up in Multi Language mode. I did a ctrl-a and then just used the bottom bar to right click it to English USA and seems to be ok now. Not sure how it got switched to begin with but it seems ok now. Thanks for the help.

Re: [Solved] Spell Check suddenly not working
I am using writer 3.0. Here is my problem: can't get spell check to work, even tho the proper language is set. When I press f7 for spell check it tells me immediately spell check is complete, even tho I know there are misspelled words in the document.
The second problem is when I make and insert an index (table of contents) it works fine except all entries are underlined and in bold. I can correct this but when I save the document and reopen it all index entries are again bold and underlined. Help!!!!
