Line numbering layout

Hello Hagar and group, :D
What I'd like to know is how to apply/set-up a legal Left border, line numbers to the Left of two verticle lines. I believe pretty stantard here in the U.S.A. anyway.

I didn't see any provision for doing this and when I tried placing the double verticle lines OpenOffice wouldn't allow me to type to the Left of them!?

Your help or others is appreciated!

TIA, David S

Hi and welcome.

I've split the thread because it doesn't seem to be related to the page numbering tutorial in fact.

Can you upload a screenshot? I don't see what are the vertical lines.

Hi Haggar,
The missing verticle double lines are the issue, these are required, I believe, on most legal documents.
I was trying to use a double-line border but then I couldn't enter numbers to the Left of it at the Left margin.

Is this something that OOo won't do, or is there a more recent update/s I should download?

Thanks, David

I'm not familiar with the formatting requirements, and I can't find a sample of a legal document that's formatted that way, but you can certainly do it be simply adding two vertical lines (from the graphic toolbar). You can anchor them to the header or footer text to have them appear on each page automatically.

Here's a sample.

Here is my proposal. I haven't found any template with that formatting neither, can you upload a PDF of what you want?

Hagar's method (setting the page border) is better, I think. That was my first thought, but you said above that it didn't work the way you wanted, so I tried a different approach.

Reading again, I think maybe you were trying to type the line numbers, instead of having OOo insert them for you.

Good Afternoon All.
This is my first post, patience requested. I read the posts on legal pleading paper, and am still a bit in the dark. I normally use Word Perfect, and understand that Word has a template, but I don't have Word. I have (hopefully) attached a PDF copy of a form of pleading paper, which is a bit different from those pictured in the posts. Any idea how to make OpenOffice do this?

Welcome to the forum!

Could you be just a bit more specific about what it is that you need that's different from Hagar's sample because your sample doesn't look substantially different--well, it's not obvious to me at least.

You can configure the vertical border under Format > Page > Border

You can configure the line numbering under Tools > Line Numbering.
 Edit: PS:
OK, I do see one important difference: the numbers don't actually count lines. The numbers at the left follow constant double-spacing, where the text varies between single and double-spaced.

I don't see any way to do that with Writer's line numbering; you'd need to use a separate frame or something with the numbering. If you do that, then there's no guarantee that the margin numbering will always line up with the text lines.
 Edit: PPS:
Here's a sample you can play with. This uses a frame on the left to provide the line numbers.

Hey, why not. How about this as a starting point?

If you have pleadings in California that need line numbering, with OpenOffice 3.4, you can use the line numbering feature. I was looking for this feature and found this forum posting. I also found the solution, which is listed on the site above.

"1. Click Tools and select Line Numbering.
2. Check the Show Numbering checkbox.
3. Select the position of the line numbers from the Position dropdown.
4. Select the numbering interval from the Interval dropdown.
5. Click OK.
6. Save the document.

For pleadings in California, check the box "Restart every new page."
