Inaccessible File

I have an inaccessible file that is extremely important to me.
I was able to access it until today, when open office tried to run me through the registration process(which included payment.) I said I wanted to register later and it jumped to a small window called the ASCII Filter Options. I tried to select a format closest to the ones related to the document, but I still cannot access it. When looking at the icon to the file it now has a 'C' on it. When I tried to access it on a simpler program (such as word pad.) The text comes up as nothing but ##########################. And is only a few pages where'st the original document was over 200 pages. This is extremely upsetting for me because I have spent over a year on this doc. I switched to Open Office because I believed it to be better than Microsoft Word. I am very disappointed. Luckily I had a new version of the file on hold but some of the text is changed. To me the 'C' can only stand for 'copyright' and I will be very upset if my doc was stolen or plagiarized. Please, can someone help me access this file, it is driving me mad. If this can't be fixed I will be uninstalling this program and never-ever using it again.
