[Solved] Chapter number doesn't increment
[Solved] Chapter number doesn't increment
Hello there,
I'm in trouble with the automatic enumeration of chapters. Suddenly it's like whenever I add a new subchapter, it stays 1 or 1.1 or 1.1.1. and so on. Why? It worked before...
I'm working with version 2.3.1 on Win XP...
Anyone with an idea?
Daniel

See here: Hierarchical Numbering of Headers.
Make sure you've used the Tools>Outline Numbering feature and not the Bullet/Numbering icon in toolbar.

Re: chapter number doesn't increment
Well, I didn't use that button. I used the context menu of my header. And I also tried Tools>Outline Numbering (at least i guess i did it - in german it's Extras>Kapitelnummerierung) but still it doesn't work
. Any more ideas?

I think that the file is somehow corrupt. It looks very suspicious. Have you imported it from a Word document?

Re: chapter number doesn't increment
I don't know why its doing it, but I just highlighted Einführung and reselected header 2 from the dropdown menu, did the same with Marktübersicht and the numbering corrected itself.
Adding further subheadings also seemed fine after doing this.
Edit - uploaded the edited file.

Re: chapter number doesn't increment
No, it doesn't come from MS Word IMHO.
Just apply the process described in the other post. There has been a manual formatting applied with numbering.
- Clear the formatting
- Hit the bullet button in toolbar until the context toolbar disappear
- Apply the Heading 2 style again.

Re: chapter number doesn't increment
But that's strange indeed. There is a list style that has been applied on the headings structure:
with a weird tag: text:is-list-header="true" (seems to remove the numbering).
Do you remember any specific action before it stopped working? Are you sure the numbering has not been applied with the bullets/numbering feature at first?
Code: Select all
<text:list text:style-name="L1">
<text:list-header>
<text:h text:style-name="P1" text:outline-level="1" ...
... text:is-list-header="true">Einleitung</text:h>
</text:list-header>
</text:list>Do you remember any specific action before it stopped working? Are you sure the numbering has not been applied with the bullets/numbering feature at first?

Re: [Solved] chapter number doesn't increment
Now I'm done.
I deleted all formatting of the whole document...
I reconfigured the settings in Tools>Outline Numbering...
Then i applied the header 1 style on the first header
Then i could see a "1" at the beginning at the first heading, so it worked
but when applying the header style to the following headers I couldn't see any numbering again
But then clicking several times on that "bullet-button" in the toolbar helped and i could see the numbers...
subheaders also work after clicking on that bullet button several times...
So now it works
But it's hard to understand what's going on in the document sometimes...
Maybe having an opportunity to make such things visible would increase usability...
Assuming i somehow used the wrong numbering feature it would be good if one could see that somehow in the document...
otherwise you only see that it doesn't work but you don't have a clue why... that's frustrating...
i guess many people will give up using oo when getting in such trouble and switch back to ms word...
Anyway, thanks a lot for your help

True. You should subscribe and vote for that old request (up to 2 votes per issue) : Issue 3395 - Reveal formatting codes.DDDan wrote:But it's hard to understand what's going on in the document sometimes...
