Page numbers stop numbering after page 9

Post by MikeCPA »

My document is 18 pages, pages 1-9 are numbered ok, but starting at page 10 to the last page the page numbers are all "1".

Page field is in a footer, on the right side...the page style is Convert 1
At some point the numbers got messed up. If I try to edit the page number field on pages 1-9, the working ones, I cannot see "fields", but I can see "fields" on the non working page fields, pages 10-18. The type is "page numbers" and the format is "as page style", but nothing works.

I'm still transitioning from WordPerfect Office 2000.....help!

Great, now all the page numbers are "1" and I have little red triangles over the page numbers!!!

Help!!!

First question:
Do all pages use the same page style? If not, should they?

Each page style has its own footer (well, it may have two footers if the left and right page footers are not set to be the same). This means that you must configure the footer for each page style that you use.

If page numbering restarts, then I expect that a page break was entered with a restart page numbering for those pages.

You did say that things used to work, so that is probably not the problem for the first pages anyway.

Place your cursor in the footer and use Insert > Fields > Page Number

Does this help at all?

All the relevant pages are "Convert 1". Page 1 is "Default" and some at the end are "Convert 2" or "Convert 3", but these are formatted differently

Each page style has its own footer (well, it may have two footers if the left and right page footers are not set to be the same). This means that you must configure the footer for each page style that you use.

All the pages using "Convert 1" seem to have the same footer

If page numbering restarts, then I expect that a page break was entered with a restart page numbering for those pages.

How/where do I look for a page break and restart page....I don't see it?

You did say that things used to work, so that is probably not the problem for the first pages anyway.

After fiddling with it, all the pages are numbered "1" and there are little red triangles over the page numbers. I have no idea how this happened! Sorry, but I'm lost.

Place your cursor in the footer and use Insert > Fields > Page Number

I tried this from page 1 downward, and it started to work, sort of...I think I got pp 1-9 back again, but pp 10-19 are still showing "1" and now I have two red triangles over the page numbers, one from left pointing rightward and one from right pointing leftward. Very strange!

Does this help at all?
Not yet, see intext answers...is there something else to check?

So you have pages 1-9, which are fine. The next page is still using the same page style, so, it should use the same footer. Something odd is happening I assume. I am not sure how to find these page breaks, but, what I would do is..... Go to the top of the page that should be numbered "10". After placing the cursor before the first thing on the page, press "backspace" to start deleting previous content. if there is a page break forcing a new page number, this should remove it.

Also, is it possible that the problem is related to formatting of the page number?

Just realized when the cursor is on a page, the status bar shows something on the bottom left such as

Page 59 63/515

When I see this, I know that the page number that should show in the footer is 59. Next, I see that I am at absolute page 63 and that there are 515 pages in the document. If you only see:

63/515

Then you are on page 63, which is the page that should appear in the footer. I then assume that page numbering has not been reset.

Worst case, email me a copy of the document and I can tell you what is wrong with it.

Yes, I have pages 1-9 back, but with the red triangles over them. Re page breaks, I have looked for them as you suggested, using the backspace method, but found none, and since I never inserted any page breaks with new page numbers, I don't think that's the problem.

Also, is it possible that the problem is related to formatting of the page number?

Never formatted a page number, so I doubt it.

I noticed before that my footer page numbers had previously agreed with my absolute page numbers on the status bar, eg page 12 agreed to 12/19, but not now.

Worst case, email me a copy of the document and I can tell you what is wrong with it.
I would need to scrub the file first, it's for an audit client...

I'm wondering about the red triangles over the page number fields, have you seen these before?

Red triangle means that there is not enough place to show the whole string. It is usually the case when a cell is too small to display its content.

Is it possible to enlarge the display field to show the whole string?

You don't control the field in itself. But it may be embedded in a frame or a table.

Right-click the Page numbers field in the footer. If you see formatting options for a table, then select Column > Width and increase the column width.

Quick solution: go to Insert --> Footer and deselect the Default. This will remove all footers.
Now Select the Default Footer again and Insert Page number (and probably other information you like to see there).

It does sound like all you are seeing is the 1 of 10, 11, 12, etc. The other digit is being obscured by something, such as a too narrow field.

I've only got 18 pages, the 2 digits had displayed ok before this problem. The page X of YY on the status bar continues to look ok to me.

1. I can find no "page number" field control on the "Page Style: Convert 1" control box, or anywhere else. It seems to me the only way to insert or place a page number field is to place your cursor there and use the insert/field/page number command.
a. Is there another way?

2. I placed my cursor in the page number field in the footer of one of the Convert 1 pages, then pressed "edit/undo" successively, and watched "stuff" get removed, live several red triangles, etc...until the page number field become blank.
Now if I do insert/field/page number, I get a "P" in the field. If I click off to the left in the footer, the click on the page number box, the page number field get's surrounded by little green boxes and an anchor appears off to the left in the footer.
a. Is it possible that successive 'inserts" can pile up "debris" in the page number field, with no error trapping from the program?
b. What do the little green boxes indicate?

This file comes from a package of standard letters designed to provide "boilerplate language" for audit work, but it's just a word.doc file that you edit and fill in answers, etc. It has some formatting but to my knowledge nothing that would affect page numbers.

Is there something else I can check?

Works fine for me once I put the page number field in the frame. Top right of the footer, there is a gray square. Select it and use the green handles to increase its size. Then put your cursor inside and insert the field for page number.

NB: you should keep working in ODF and export in .doc when needed only. Remember that the .doc format has been reverse engineered.

Thanks for your patience, Hagar!

1.
a.
(The green handles open sporadically for me.)
From a right click on the green handles, I can open a frames control box, and the Type Tab shows width=.14" and height=.16". Can I use the width=Automatic and height=Autosize settings, would these solve my page number field size problem?
(It seems late last night I had set these and now they have reverted back....is this possible?)
b.
Apparently sometime ago I had changed tools/options for OO Writer and OO Writer/Web views to display field codes. Is there a program method to restore each section to factory default settings?

2
When I do a file "save as" to .odt format, I lose my footers (with the Advantage Audit picture and page number field). These are files I opened in .doc format from the vendor file. Could this be another tools/options settings problem?

The immediate way is to /View / Field Codes in the file in question; this is a toggle so a Page Number will change from nn to Page Number or back. You can also select / Tools / Options / OpenOffice.org Writer / View : Field Codes. (Under Preferences on a Mac?)

Indeed, you may have to reinsert the picture in the footer. The footers/headers are prone to such flaws when changing formats. But ODF is more robust IMHO.
If you really need to work in .doc, I were you I would use MS Office.

Are there "better" or "safer" ways to convert .doc files to ODF?
I see a conversion wizard, and also the "save as" method....any others?

On an initial test conversion from an original .doc file, I got the footers! Once I have a complete working file in ODF, provided I don't lose anything, I may not need to convert back to ms.doc format.

Thanks kindly to Hagar and everyone for being patient with this newbie!

No. Save as and the conversion wizard do the same. Either keep the .doc format but you may have to redo the work each time you save/load the file or redo it from scratch in ODF and it should be safer.
