[Solved] Loading errors when opening .rtf files

I have had a deuce of a time lately with Writer.

First, it's giving me errors when I open my first .rtf files for the day. When I open it up, this is the error I get:

Error loading BASIC of document file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Owner/Application%20Data/OpenOffice.org/3/user/basic/dialog.xlc/:General Error
General input/output error

And when I click on the OK for that, I get this:

When I click on OK for that, the box disappears and the file looks fine. Subsequent files open without error. But if I keep the file/files open for any length of time, the program crashes when I try to close them. Usually, this means my files need to be recovered on program restart, and Writer sometimes saves them as .odt after recovery.

Now, full disclosure: these files are in my Dropbox folder, but still, this has been going on for just a couple of weeks, and I've had Dropbox for a lot longer with no problem up until now. It seems to be getting worse every time. I've been sending in error reports all along.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you get a similar error when loading an .odt file?

Note that OpenOffice support for .rtf format is not good; in general experienced forum volunteers do not advocate using it.

Yes, I get the same errors when opening an .odt file.

I really haven't had a lot of trouble with .rtf; when I first started using OO, it seemed like the only file type that would translate well between OpenOffice and Microsoft Office. I know that has changed.

You should try deleting or renaming your User Profile
