What do i type to make a formula output the result in OpenOffice writer?

You can insert a table cell and type in =(formula) and the result will show in the cell, replace formula with you actual formula.

Is there anyway to do it just using insert > object > formula?

Not that I am aware of. The Formula editor is just for writing formulas for display in a normal text environment.

Hmm ok. They should add that though. Would be handy. No point in writing out a nicely formatted formula if it doesn't calculated the answer XD

A text document is not a calculation sheet. If you want the calculation, use Calc. Else, it means that you're looking for something else than a word processing.
