Copy format by shortcut

Post by mupan »

Hi, maybe I didn't find a post on this because I do not know the exact icon tool tip in English. I use German language interface of current OOO and search for "Format übertragen". Like in Word <Ctrl+Shift+C> and <Ctrl+Shift+V>, is there a way to copy a format from a selection to another by keystrokes rather then by fiddling around with the mouse?

If you don't know what I mean: http://word.tips.net/Pages/T000193_Form ... rtcut.html

Thanks.

In my opinion, you need to use the character styles, paragraph styles instead of format-copy.

I've never come across that function in Writer. CTRL+SHIFT+V is "paste special", but pasting of format isn't a "paste special" option.

CTRL+SHIFT+C and CTRL+SHIFT+V in Word 2000 can copy and paste character styles and paragraphs styles. They aren't always used "instead of" character styles and paragraph styles.

Really (I tried now in WordXP), the CTRL+SHIFT+C and CTRL+SHIFT+V copy and paste character styles and paragraphs styles
(but it can paste the manual formatting in styles in this case only: when you select and copy ONLY the part of paragraph what you was format manually)

...I think that: it is faster way to copy the 'format' by apply an existing style from "styles and formatting" bar (when it is always visible).
In my opinion it is faster, than "Select formatted text - CTRL+SHIFT+C - Select text what you want to format - CTRL+SHIFT+V"...

Is it possible to do that without using the mouse?

(1) Select the text [that should be formatted] in the document

(2) Select the style [that should be applied]
Step 1
Ctrl+F11 (Apply Styles / Formatting toolbar) (Navigation with Arrow Up/Down)
→ Step 4

Step 2 (more)
Arrow Down > More... > Enter (Styles & Formatting [Automatic])
(Navigation with Arrow Up/Down)
→ Step 4

Step 3–x (more/all)
Tab > Arrow Up (Custom Styles, Applied Styles, All Styles...) >
Shift+Tab (focus to the list of styles)
Arrow Up/Down for Selection
→ Step 4

Step 4
Enter

;)

Why do you want to do that without using the mouse?

That was the OP's original question!

Edit:
@franx: Thanks for the tip on the CTRL+F11 keyboard shortcut. I'd never been able to figure out how to shift the focus to the styles list in the Styles and Formatting window in Writer without using the mouse. In Word 2000, opening the Styles window automatically shifts the focus to styles list in the window, so it's only necessary to scroll to the style using the arrow keys then press Enter to apply the style.

Thank you for your contributions. My boss sent to me to Slovenia so I could not keep track of the discussion here.

Well, I do know of styles. I tend to use them as often as possible. But I do not want to make a style out of every direct format I had to apply. There are opportunities for direct formats and for styles.

Anyway, developing a macro that stores the file definition e.g. in a style def. and applying the stored formats by another macro, and defining shortcuts to run these is one of the workarounds for this missing function I thought about. I just wanted to avoid the effort and asked if I am just blind not to find the function in the shortcut-to-command dialogs.

Thank you.

Found a previous discussion on that topic: http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=90470 I would never talk as such to a client, even if our software was free. But it's none of the developers who is so arrogant but someone who calls himself a superuser, or is said to be one from the statistics of his postings.

But that's not the point. I just learned that what I want does not exist and is not intended to exist or to be developed in the future. So as long as the format painter exists, I make use of it by means of the mouse (work speed minus 5 degrees), and if it is removed, define a style for every single solution (work speed minus 20 degrees).

Can't find a way to close this thread or mark it as closed / "solved", so ...

Was that Villroy or me :)

The thing is that if you have a say three or four templates developed for the major types of documents you use regularly there is almost never need to use direct formatting. There is the upfront development time but the speed and improved performance pays off. I agree that it's silly to make a new Style for each instance but a well developed template should handle about 95% of the formatting issues for most users. People who do really weird and lurid posters are probably not in the the group.

I read this thread and the other thread linked to this one. I realize they're from 2010.

I'm astonished at how people who are trying to use the software are spoken to. User says: "I'd like to do *this." Response: "Don't try to do that thing that you're trying to do. Instead you should try to use the software the way that we think you should!"

I would like to be able to copy and paste formats. There is a format paintbrush feature coded but no option to add a hotkey for it, seemingly for the principle that users should not be using it at all.

Why would I want this feature? Because in calc I have a cluster of cells each with different formatting, and I want to copy and paste multiple cells and styles simultaneously, but not the content. If I don't want this available in other documents, then there is no point in creating permanent styles.

If Microsoft Office ran on Ubuntu, I would install it, seriously. The bazaar has become a cathedral when the developers tell users what to use the software for.

This is a user-to user forum. there are no developers here telling users anything. We offer alternative methods if what the user wants to do isn't possible. If you want a new feature instead of an alternative method, file an enhancement request.

You can define the shortcut in 'Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard'
I used CTRL+SHIFT+C and assigned it to Edit -> Format PaintBrush.
Now this key combination copies the format and then you can click anywhere you want to paste the format. You dont even have to use CTRL+SHIFT+C to paste it.

All shortcuts can be found if you search 'Shortcuts' in the help page. The above info to edit shortcuts also came from there.
