[Solved] Special Characters in OOo Writer

Post by beanwriterf »

Hello,

New here, was born yesterday into the OO world. Have been using MS Office 97 since pretty much then.

Does anybody know if OO Writer has the symbol for "therefore"? I believe it is a math symbol used in Algrebra.

It looks like a triangle made from three dots or circles at the 3 corners of the triangle. I can't find it anywhere in special characters.

It looks like this (hope this comes out in the post)

Well it looks like the post skewed it - should be more "isosceles" in shape.

I think it depends on what font you are looking at. In MS Gothic I found this character ∴

I bet it can be found elsewhere also, but I don't know how to search other than manually scanning.

... or DejaVu Sans ...
you could use the "Subset" drop down list box: Unicode Block "Mathematical Operators".
Then search in other fonts.

∴ U+2234 THEREFORE

Thanks to all. I finally found it in the symbol font. However, somewhere along the way I changed a settings (I suppose) and now when I go to the autocorrect options, replace tab, and right click in the "with" field to bring up the list of symbols, the font field is greyed out. It only lets me select the subset.

However, I do know that the character is there, because I can find it when Inserting Special Character, and select "symbol" font: it appears on the 4th line down, 4th from the right side of the list. :knock:

Help! I've spent a good part of today uninstalling, installing, uninstalling and deleting application data files, re-installing and hoping that whatever setting I had changed would go back to default.

My problem is: When I right-click in the Autocorrect-Replace tab, "with" field (ie to take me to the special characters), when in special characters I cannot change the font - it is greyed out! I need to change it to, say, Symbols font, to get the "therefore" symbol.
Also, the "text only" checkbox is greyed out.

If anyone can direct me to the setting in options (which I've been through 10 times trying everything), please and thank you

You might try as follows:

(1) Open Writer and the window "Special Characters" and select "∴"
(2) Click "OK" ["∴" will be copied to your document]
(3) Select/highlight "∴" and open the window "AutoCorrect" ["∴" will be set in the "With:" field]
(4) Select the language for the replacement
(5) Mark "Text only"
(6) Type a shortcut in the "Replace" field
(7) Click "New" ["∴" and the shortcut will be set as a new line in the replacement table]

(8) Click "OK"
(9) Try ...

Re: Special Characters in OOo Writer-SOLVED

Thanks franx for your round-about-way. It worked. :bravo:

It still leaves me stumped, though.

When I go Format>AutoCorrect>AutoCorrect Options, the "Text Only" checkbox is greyed out (not changeable). And when I right-click in the "With" field to bring up special characters, I'm unable to change the font for the same reason, and it is "stuck", greyed out, saying "Tahoma".

Weird.

Well as long as I can get around it, but the true geek/nerd in me wants to know why!

Cheers.
