[Issue] How to edit pages side-by-side using OOo Writer?
[Issue] How to edit pages side-by-side using OOo Writer?
When I was a translator I used Word and once knew how how to fix the original text for translation to the left of the screen, alongside my English translation to the right, page for page. This must be possible with OpenOffice Writer.
The Help pages are good but unfortunately I do not know what search term to use ... (double-page edit? That didn't work..)
I would be most grateful for any input.
Regards

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Are you looking for something like that: [Issue] Editing panes? (Issue 19291).

hello Hagar
With Word I used to split a doc in two in the same window. I am sure it is possible with OOWriter.

Re: How to edit pages side-by-side using OOo Writer?
I know just a workaround solution.
See the menu item:
In an opened document, Menu-> Window->New window.
Then you need to resize both window of same document to desired size and position. You can to do this with two differend documents too.

Re: How to edit pages side-by-side using OOo Writer?
Thanks Tibor, but I suspect that the moment you start typing, the other window would disappear. This did not happen with Word, whereby I just open the two documents in the same window side by side, and I could type or edit either without the other one disappearing.

No. With no layout above, the windows don't overlap so they keep being visible.
Have you voted for the bug report? This is the only way to get that feature implemented.

That is true, but with word it was possible to see entire , equal-sized pages in the same Window. It was essential to, e.g. translating, for which it is essential that both documents are synchronised. i.e. if I have an original text in French and the target langauge is English I would want both equivalent pages appearing side by side - in the SAME WINDOW.

Then the answer is no.
Can you upload a screenshot of that feature in MS Word (see: How to attach a document here)? I don't recall it (especially the synchronization between the 2 sides).

I think about it:
...And what happen, when the size of source text not equals to size of target text, and a string (a word or a paragraph) not located at same pagenumber?

Re: [Issue] How to edit pages side-by-side using OOo Writer?
There is a fundamental difference in the structural constructs used in MS Office and in OpenOffice. As far as I remember MS Office uses MDI (Multiple Document Interface) structure, which allows two synchronised panes, and OOo doesn't. Any method proposed will be a workaround, of greater or less success depending on the detail. If you _must_ have the methods used in MS Office, you will have to return to it.

Thanks guys. Using web layout for each doc is an effective workaround, I agree.

I know it's form a lot of time ago, but here is a shot of MS Word in action; the two documents scrolls togheter while you edit. It's a really nice feature, would like a lot to see it in OOo Writer...
