About .docx format, have a look at:
- Say NO to the new MS Office OOXML format as ISO standard
- Microsoft Fails the Standards Test

This is rather new unformation to us. Normally you can simply open this pestilence of a file format.
OpenOffice.org does not even detect the type of this file so it might be broken.

Can you upload the file if there is no sensitive data (see: How to attach a document here)?

I think the file is corrupt. OOo 3.2 refuses to open it, at least using my preliminary attempts.

I can open the file in a zip tool, so it seems to be a valid archive at least.

AbiWord loads the file showing this simple content without any form controls:

It means how bad is that docx format. Only MS applications can read it. So far for the interoperability...

I can open it OK in Word 2007, however it opens in compatibility mode so there is something wrong with the file. If I save it in Word in either .doc or docx formats then the problem is fixed and Writer has no problem opening either. I've attached the .doc version so you can use it.

It might be an idea to let the hotel who sent you this to know that there is a problem with the form and if they don't want to lose business because people can't even open it then they also should convert their version to .doc.

Or they can try to use OOo and use a true standard if they want to cut their costs, saving the price of MS Office depending on their use of it (maybe they need Excel).

On my Mac I can open the file with Pages, TextEdit, and Bean. OOo won't open it.

On my Mac it opens with Pages 08 and includes the logo at the top. It opens with Nisus Writer Pro 1.4 but without the logo.

Have I read this right? The way this was solved was to ask the sender to change the format? I'm getting this problem with a job application form. Don't really want to ask the employer to submit the form in a different format. MS Outlook (formerly hotmail) allows me to open it and fill it in - but it's not wysiwyg and you have to keep changing the view to make sure it looks right (pain). If I could open it in OO I could check that it is OK before I send it off.

The ORIGINAL file I got DID open in OO but the tables were all over the place and impossible to fill in.
Loading docx file into OO. Formatting has columns all over the show
Loading docx file into OO. Formatting has columns all over the show
So I used outlook to 'edit and return' online - but sent it to my own email address to check it first. But I can't really check it with OO because the completed form that I sent back to myself - when it opens in OO offers me a Filter Selection.

Asking for a new form will not 'solve' this for me. Any other ideas?

I'm using OO 4.1.3

OK so; The way I solved this was another work around - in other words I have not solved this for open office. I was able to load both the original form AND the filled out form in LibreOffice. I exported as a PDF to be sure what I could see the sender would see because I couldn't be sure if I exported it in MS word 2003-2011XML (as libreoffice told me) was going to render properly.

On this occasion at least - LibreOffice was better than Open Office because it allowed me to open the file and work on it. (although I prefer the look and feel of OO and I'm more familiar with it)

LibreOffice does indeed focus more on the compatibility with OOXML (.docx/.xlsx/...).
