[Issue] Shrink to fit?

Post by Vinlaw »

Hi. New user, I use primarily WP, but also some word.

For my business I love the "shrink to fit" option of word. WP uses "make it fit". I have searched but cannot find anywhere a similar app in oo.

Here is how it works. You type away at a letter, but the last couple of lines run over to the next page. By using shrink to fit or make it fit, with the press of a button the document is shrunk to one page. Before anyone suggests altering font, the same applies for a 9 page document, shrink down to 8. The difference is that it automatically maximizes your document to the largest font setting, giving a nice finished product.

In my searches I read about cells being shrink to fit in OO, but not in writer. Thanks for any help

OOo has no such function. Of course, there are lots of ways to do it manually, but it would be nice to be able to just click a button.

Such a feature has been requested: Issue 78914: Universal "Fit to page goal" button for shrinking (or expanding) any document to X# of pages

Thanks for the feedback. I have so many documents that run over with just the signature lines on the last page that shrink to fit is a must for me. I will keep checking back to see if it ever gets added.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm not an experienced user. However, if I want to get more peas into a bag, don't I have to use smaller peas? One way or the other, the font must shrink. Is that not an option, to decrease the font size?

The problem is when there are non text items like graphics and so on, that are part of the page layout.

The beauty of shrink to fit is that it does a perfect job every time so if the original font is 12, it may change it to 11.8 to make it all fit perfectly. If I do it manually it is guesswork. Not the biggest issue but it has been a part of word and wordperfect since 97.

Vinlaw has begun to take the words out of my mouth. Moreover, Shrink to Fit in Word reduces all the font sizes in proportion (and I think line/paragraph spacing as well), just enough to get the content to fit on one fewer page. Trying to do all this manually would be very cumbersome, even if you make efficient use of styles.

And you can't even do it manually, because you normally can't set a font size to for instance 10.8.

It is possible; one just has to add the decimal point and the decimal figure to that offered in any font size box, and then press Enter.

Yes, it's possible now. It was only possible with a limited set of values in Word 2002. You can set it to 12.5 there for instance, but no other decimal values are allowed. But if you apply the shrink to fit, it can do anything.
