[Solved] How do I remove this blank space beneath a table

Post by Husoku »

Hello Community,

New member, first message, long time OpenOffice user :)

First off, let me boldly state the following that I am sure many of you can concur with: I AM SICK AND TIRED OF MS WORD! Thank you to everyone at Open Office for their time in making your AMAZING FREE OFFICE SUITE!

I haven't done much work with tables until recently, and I have come across a slight glitch (user incompetence)

I am using the most up-to-date Writer 2.3.1. Please review the following two screen shots:

You can see at the Red arrow there is no space, but at the Green arrow, there is a space. As you can see this is part of a List and I am using tables to get easier control over different levels of sub-lists.

I don't know how to remove the space below tables at the green arrow. I have tried everything I can think of... My document is rather long with a lot of short lists and these added spaces taking up a lot of it. As for the tables above and below the Red arrow, I don't know how it did that! I have gone through many menus and I can't figure out how to get closer to the table below it. I think the tables in the Red arrow are corrupt somehow and somehow the space below that table was accidentally replaced or hidden.

My Question: How can I eliminate the blank space you see above the Green Arrow beneath all of my tables? Delete and Backspace just erase the entire table or break out of the List!

Thank you very much in advance!

It's too bad you made your screenshots without showing the non-printing characters. I assume (from playing around with a similar list) that the green arrow actually points to an empty, unnumbered paragraph, so that if you turn on non-printing characters, there's a paragraph mark there--right?

At least that's what I see, and you're absolutely right: backspace or delete at any point around that paragraph break either the list or the table, without removing the empty paragraph!

If we're on track so far, try this:
1) Place the editing cursor on the empty paragraph
2) Click the "Numbering On/Off" button. This should make the empty paragraph into an empty list item, in sync with the rest of the list.
3) Type Delete. The following list item ("Rear Bumpers" in your sample) should then move up and there will be no more empty paragraph.

acknak,

Thank you for the help--

Here is the good sample with non-printed characters turned on:

And here is the bad sample:

You are right, there is an extra paragraph beneath the table that I cannot seem to get rid of.

I tried your instructions to no avail. All delete will do is just remove the List I just created, but the paragraph and a new indent remains.

Hmmmm... Strange..

Hey! I got it!

If you cut the contents of the table, then delete the table, and then paste it right back, the extra blank paragraph is gone!!

I don't know if this is a bug or if it is supposed to be like this, but at least I found a way around it.

Thanks again for your help!

The solution of cut and paste is merely a work around. I consider this a bug. I too am unable to deleter the empty paragraph symbol without cutting the table out of the document and pasting it into a new blank document. I must do this because in my document, this issue forces a new empty blank page that I am unable to remove from the document. I have no text that follows the table, so I have no need for this page.

I consider this a bug, and it should be addressed as such.

You can delete the extra line after any table by clicking in the last table cell (bottom right) and typing Ctrl+Shift+Delete.
