OpenOffice document email attachment will not open

Post by loiswalker »

I created a document in openoffice, then attached the file to an e-mail message and sent it out. The person it was sent to could not open it because that person had only Microsoft Word as a word processor and Microsoft opened it in a text that wasn't readable. She also tried to open the document with quickview, but was told the file had an error and could not be opened. Can someone help me with this problem?

OpenOffice and MS Office save their files in different formats. You have to take extra steps to be able to exchange documents.

The ideal is for all authors to use the same software, so e.g. the people you want to exchange documents with could also install and use OOo. Of course, it costs nothing for them to do so, but most people do not want to (or cannot) use anything but MS Office. If is is not practical for everyone to use OOo, then you need to send them document in a format MS Office can read.

When you want to send a document to an MS Office user, try this:

File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word

If that doesn't work, then you need to do it manually:

1) File > Save As > File type = "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP"
2) Attach that file to your email message
AOO4/LO5 • Linux • Fedora 23

...in addition to that good suggestion, you might also consider saving the file as an "RTF" (Rich Text File) to exchange with your co-author(s). Just be careful that retaining exact formating isn't critical, if you chose this method. Hope that's helpful.
