[Solved] Numbering like for images

Post by SasQ »

Howdy.
In a book I'm writing there are some highlighted paragraphs of different types: "facts", "enigmas", "paradoxes", "questions" and "research goals". They should have similar numbering like images or equations: consisting of its category name (one of the mentioned above), current chapter number, a dot (separator), current item number in the current paragraph, a colon and at last the paragraph content itself. So it should looks like:
PARADOX 2.1: It can't be a wave and a particle at the same time.
where "2" is from "Chapter 2", and "1" is a number of "paradox" in "Chapter 2" (not in the whole book).

For images it's quite easy, because for the built-in subtitles one can select to use the current chapter's number in the numbering. But how to achieve the same for that paragraph styles?

I've tried to make some list styles for them, but they didn't work as I expected.

Maybe it could be achieved the same way as that AutoText numbered formulas? [BTW how do they work?]

And there is one more thing, not so important, but good to have:
Is there any way to attach some icons on the margins for that paragraphs identifying their type visually? E.g some fancy question mark picture for "enigmas", Moebius belt for "paradoxes" etc.

I've tried to achieve it using image bullets, but they're exclusive with numbering :x

You can create your own caption categories that are just like the pre-defined ones for drawings, tables, equations, etc. Just use Insert > Caption and type in your own category, e.g. "Paradox".

I don't think it's a caption, because caption for what? :?
It only behaves like caption in a way that it is numbered that special way (CurrentChapter.ParagraphNumber).

I think you should use an AutoText including your "PARADOX " string, then a field for the chapter number then a Number range field (CTRL+F2, then Variables tab). To create your first AutoText, type "PARADOX ", insert the chapter number field, insert a number range field called 'paradox' for example (in the dialog, put in the value field 'paradox+1'). Then select the whole and hit CTRL+F3, give it a name and a shortcut and then create the AutoText.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

It's only a name.

Still, Hagar is right. The "caption" feature doesn't seem to provide anything helpful for this beyond what a number range with some extra context gives you, and an autotext is a good way to make that convenient.

@acknak:
So try to attach the caption for nothing :roll:
You're right, it has a number range and it could be reproduced other ways, but that doesn't mean that it's the same and that it's ONLY a number range.

@Hagar de l'Est:
Thank you again. You're real OOo guru! :D It works like a breeze :)
The only problem I can see here is when I would like to change the structure of that AutoText, then it won't update automagically in the whole document. Only styles can do that.

I will have one more question for you, but in separate thread (as the rules demand).
