Pictures disappeared from MS Word document

I have recently had a new hard drive installed, and all documents, pictures etc have been transferred over from my old drive. I was using Microsoft Word 10. Everything transferred okay, but on going into a word document previously created the pictures have disappeared - is there a solution. thank you

What document format is used? Is it .odt (best) or .doc?

As possibly the folder format differs on the new computer, you may need to reinsert the pictures.

What do you see where the images should be?

Also, if the pictures were embedded in the document file they should still be there; if they were linked, their position relative to the transferred file is a key factor.

thank you all for your replies. firstly where the pictures should be, between the words, there is a blank space. on opening up an old word document it is now saved with the extension .docx

For information: OpenOffice can open .docx files, inasmuch as it does its best with a foreign format, but cannot Save to that format.

For the record, it happened to me in 2006 with MS Word and a .doc file. That was the reason why I decided to switch to OpenOffice(.org) because of the documented file format (.odt from the ODF standard).
If the file size is small, then all the pics have been lost.
In the properties of the files, are there any links to the pics (if they were not embedded)?
