Variable width in Form Design Text Box

Post by beank »

I am trying to convert a frequently used text document to a form fill document, but the final product needs to look like a normal paragraph.

IE: the first piece of the form is the name of a city. I need the text box to adjust to the width of the city name if it is 3 letters (Ada) or 15 letters (Mount Blanchard), such that the next word does not have any extra space before it AND the city name is displayed in full without having to scroll.

What about a text frame instead of a form control?

Insert menu/Frame submenu/Frame

Edit:
Right click for properties, set width to autosize

They are close, they have the variable width, but unless i am missing something, they are locked in place. If information around the box changes the box does not change position with it.

Also, the information in the text box is not selectable with Ctrl+A.

EDIT: I found the "As Character" option in "position and size".... that fixed both of those problems. Even lets me tab between them!

Thank you for the suggestion and help!

One quick hiccup though....

The text is all selectable, but when you paste it into another area, like the textbox of a webpage text editor, the content of the textbox is not copied over and appears blank.

This is text outside the box, here is text inside the box: . Now we are back to text out side the box.

Is there something i am doing wrong? Should i attach my test document?

EDIT: The first sentence was a copy paste from the document... to see if it worked in this text editor...

Hang on... I get what you mean... with a frame and some text copying and pasting here just gives the document text. That seems to be a limitation with the browser textbox... if as an intermediate step I paste it into Windows Wordpad it includes both... and copy it again from there.

Neither Notepad, Notepad++, or WordPad copy it...

Word copies it but converts it to an image...

Is there a special Copy or Paste key command?

EDIT: Just to be sure its not a programing difference, I am going to download and try Openoffice

EDIT2: Openoffice will let me copy to Wordpad. Is there a way to paste it so the end of the box is not treated as a line break?

My version of Wordpad is an old one (as I don't like the ribbon) and it works for me on that - I get the same results as you with the others. I think I got mine from XP but you could try this link (virus scan of course to be safe)
