[Solved] Curly quotes won't curl

Post by chrijeff »

Right in the middle of what I was doing, from one line to the next, the curly quotes went back to straight. I tried using the Tools: AutoCorrect Options, and it doesn't work; no matter how many times I go to the special characters and click, it absolutely *refuses* to take. So now what?

No, I don't think I can. I guess I'll just have to go on Word on the public computers every day and fix all my work from the last 24 hours or so. *sigh* Honestly, I'm beginning to wonder if I shouldn't just go back to a typewriter, if I could find one...

Autocorrect only works on Default text style, as far as I remember.

All right. I went back and clicked the AutoCorrect: While Typing which I had unchecked so I wouldn't keep getting blue suggestions. And now I've got my curly quotes back. Along with those useless irritating blue suggestions! I don't suppose there's anything I can do about those, but at least I can make the doc. look the way I want it to. Thank you, everyone.

OpenOffice 4.1: Tools>AutoCorrect... tab "Word Completion" = OFF.
And keep the quotes on tab "Localized Options". Curly quotes look different in different langauges, therefore they are localized. „German Curlies“ look like this.

Nope. My AOO 4.1.10 can auto-correct curlies in headings and other styles.

Format > AutoCorrect > Apply only works on the Default paragraph style. Format > AutoCorrect > While Typing works on other paragraph styles.

I see. Is this a bug or a feature?

I don't know whether it's a bug or feature. LO has the same behavior.

I suspect the Autocorrect Apply was originally designed for a quick format of long text inserted from perhaps a plain text editor, and the "while typing" option was to permit editing and fine tuning of that "autocorrected" document.

If it can be util, on my OpenOffice I choose from menu:
Tools -> AutoCorrect Options...
in the tab Localized Options -> Double quote:
deselected the box Replace

That's what you do if you want straight quotes while typing. If you want curly quotes while typing, you have to check the "Replace" boxes.

Are you having problems with the quotes while typing or when you paste text? The replacement is only automatic while typing.
