[Solved] AOO Writer user profile location in Linux

Post by redx48 »

Hi,
I want to back up my OpenOffice Writer configurations and settings in my Linux Mint o/s and I assume they'd be kept in a user profile folder somewhere, but I can't find it. Does anyone know the location please?

On my Xubuntu machine, at
/home/<my user name>/.openoffice/4/

the . before openoffice indicates this is a hidden file. In your file manager press Ctrl H to view hidden files.

I think RoryOF meant /home/<my user name>/.OpenOffice/4/ - note the upper case. You can also use ~/.openoffice/4/
where the tilde ~ is a shortcut to /home/<username> for the current user.

Not capitals on my computers - all lower case; this may vary according to exact linux distro.

Sorry - brain fart :ucrazy: I was looking at my default directory for documents, not the profile directory. It is in fact lower case. Mea culpa, mea culpa.

As self-punishment, I shall use Windows for a day !!

That seems a little extreme! Three Hail Marys and don't do it again!

Ok, I found the openoffice user folder. Looks like I need to backup the whole user folder because I can't find a specific profiles or configurations folder/file inside it.

Thanks for the help.

The User folder contains the entire OpenOffice Profile, including dictionaries and installed extension. So you do need to back it up in its entirety.

Beware of the /backup folder in that profile. If you've activated the option to create a backup copy, then it can grow in size with all the documents being backed up there. You may want to ignore it from your profile backup.

Thanks for that advice. It shouldn't be an issue though because I just copy/paste the user folder to a spare data ssd.

See Resetting the user profile for a full description of the folders in the profile.

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

Hagar's point is really that, if backups are enabled, the backup section of the User Profile will keep increasing, perhaps containing backups of older (now discarded) files. It can theoretically eat much disk space, so a little housekeeping is not out of place.

For example on my Linux system (although the backup folder isn't in the profie)

bash-4.3$ pwd
/home/huntsman/OpenOffice/backups
bash-4.3$ ls |wc -l
532
bash-4.3$ du -h
209M

In other words, 532 files with a size of 209 Mb. Yes, I do need to clean up my backups :D and yes, it's an old kernel.

If one is regularly using the timestamped backup extension, particularly on large (say book-sized) files, this, by default, stores its timestamped files in the Backups directory and can really consume disk space.

This one is using the extension, hence the size and number of files. My usual procedure is edit a bit, save, invoke the extension; repeat as needed.

Yes, I understand Hagar's point ok. My point, which I should have explained better, is that I do manual backups only. I don't have backup software enabled. I used to have Timeshift saving snapshots to a spare partition but changed my thinking about the way I handle the whole backup process.

Thanks
