[Solved] Read Error Lost all my work...

Post by NewGuy777 »

Help, I've been editing a file and suddenly there is a read-error "Format error discovered in file in sub-document context XML at (2,3743) (row, col)" I lost all my work!

Any help is appreciated!

Please upload the file either to Forum (upload tab is below Submit button on Post Reply and Fill Editor Screens) or post a link to a filesharing service whence we might download the file.

This will allow the file be examined, and hopefully fixed.

Please upload the file or provide a link to it.

You can fix it yourself by following [Tutorial] Format error discovered in sub-document

We need access to the file. We are not currently allowed that.

God bless you. Hasn't come through yet. But I'm already grateful. Is there a way I can prevent this from happening in the furture?

Yes - turn off change tracking! It is your file, you should know what changes you make in it. John_Ha may have other recommendations, equally valid.

See Issue 128356 - Track Changes and Annotations on text range can cause corruption. Applies to 4.x (all versions?)

This is a known bug in AOO, but not in LO, which occurs when
  • Edit > Changes ..., is set to RECORD
  • a user deletes a run of text which contains two ranges where comments are attached to the ranges
I therefore strongly recommend users who use tracked changes to move to LibreOffice.
Deleting the highlighted run of text while Edit > Changes is set to RECORD causes the corruption
Deleting the highlighted run of text while Edit > Changes is set to RECORD causes the corruption
See the attached Test of AOO bug.odt file where Edit > Changes ..., is set to RECORD. Highlight the run of text, delete it, and Save the file. Opening the saved file shows the error.
