[Solved-Workaround] Second document illegible with Antidote

Post by pbl »

Hi
I cant open 2 documents in Writer at the same time, the second document ( .doc or odt) opens with grey panel borders overlapping texts and inserts elements and black horizontal lines through blank space ( see attached) I have reinstalled Open office without success. Windows is up to date as are graphic drivers. ( Intel i7 9700 @ 3.6GHz , 64 GB RAM)

It seems like a bug but i cant find any other reports of this problem

Any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks
Paul

Does the second document open correctly on its own? My immediate reaction is that driving the displays for the two documents may be overloading your computer. Can you give us model number or specification of your computer and graphics card, also resolution of the display screen you are using.

Thanks for responding,
Yes any file opened first will open correctly. The same file opened second will not. Computer is a MSI Z390-A Pro board with an Intel i7 9700k @ 3.60GHZ CPU. Graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce RTX 2070 Super. Displays are Dell U2518D, Dell U2412M, Acer AL1716 and Samsung LF24T35 . Resolutions are 2560 x1440, 1920 x 1080, 1920 x 10 80, and 1280 x 1024. I'm not experiencing any display problems in image, video or DAW (sound editing ) programs.

If you were to open the files on a monitor set to a reduced resolution, just for test, do they open correctly? Try the 1280x1024.

I have just opened two book-length files on a 1920 x 1080 display, part of a three monitor setup - the other two are 1280 x 1024; they both opened perfectly. I am using Xubuntu 20.04.2 with video X11 running on an ATI Radeon Cedar (HD 5450, from memory).

I dragged both documents to all monitors and the second remains illegible. I opened them both on the 1280x1024 with the same results. This may not be a display issue.

I note that the sum of your monitor widths is 7680, exactly xhat the RTX2700 supports. What happens if you (for test) remove one or two monitors from your setup?

I just disconnected 2 monitors with no change. S0, I am assuming this isn't a bug which means its a local problem that somehow is only affecting Open Office.

Have you played with the graphics output options in Tools > Options > AOO > View?

I agree with Hagar - try the four possible options of Anti-aliasing on/off, Graphic acceleration on/off in /Tools /Options /OpenOffice / View. I suggest restarting OpenOffice completely after each change, to be certain that change has been applied.

If you pull the second document to another screen, does it then become legible?

No luck with pivoting graphic acceleration and anti-alias. Dragging from one screen to another or opening both documents on the same screen has no effect.

I have a memory that fuzzy display on a Mac can be cured by adjusting (disabling?) a display setting; I cannot remember just which, so you should wait for help from a Mac user.

Try LibreOffice...
Thank you Hagar that was the solution. The problem does not exist with LibreOffice and I think I understand why. I'm Canadian, so since everything is available in both French and English, I falsely assumed that reference to "LibreOffice" was to the french language version of Open Office. I installed Antidote 10, (a grammar correcter that installs as a macro into the text editor) which is compatible with libreoffice. Now I realize that Open office and Libreoffice are two different programs. I didn't reinstall Open Office without Antidote 10 to verify this, but I think its a good bet.

thanks for all your help,

Paul
