Hi, I much appreciate the Format - Area and select Gradient option for use in such objects as frames within writer documents in LibreOffice with the extensive ability to customize such, and I see this option as listed in AOo tutorials for Draw and Impress, but this is missing in Apache for objects such as Frames in Writer. (Meanwhile LibreOffice 7 will not retain custom saved (Add) Gradients for use in other documents or the one i save it from once LO is properly restarted, but that should be an issue for their forum.)
I am using Apache OpenOffice 4.1.8 with the application being in C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice 4\program\ and with the user files in %localappdata%\RoamingOpenOffice\4\user.

The LO 4.x.x versions are very old versions. The latest LO Still versions are the 6.x.x and the latest Fresh ones are the LO 7.x.x.LibreOffice 4
Try one of them.
