Apply different headers on different pages

Post by dirki »

Edit: Split from [Solved] How to apply different headers on different pages? because that issue is solved and a new person has new questions.
This issue is not solved. It is impossible to have multiple header and footer combinations in the same document. When you edit the header and footer for a style, you can only ever use that style in a document that already happens to have the header and footer for that style.

So, you go to a document that has a header and footer, and you try to insert a page with another style, the style is simply not in the menu (it is not greyed out, it is not to be seen).

But once you open a document that has the header and footer you want to insert in the second document, there is the style for you to insert. But remember, the document you opened already has the correct header and footer.

This functionality just tells you what the style of the current document is, you cannot insert another style.

Styles are local to documents. If you want to copy a style from a document to another so that you can use it, you can use the Stylist (F11) and with the button Styles actions > Load style, you can select the source document and the kind of style to import. Then it will be available to the current document.

Or use a template with all the styles you need for a specific kind of text document.
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

If you are listing Page Styles using /Format /Styles and Formatting, and pressing the 4th icon from left, the page styles will be shown. If on that Styles and Formatting window the dropdown in the bottom bar has had "Applied Styles" selected, then only the styles actually in use are shown. To use another style for the first time from the available selection, one has to select All Styles or other more general selection in the bottom bar of Styles and Formatting Window. Once the style has been used, one can (for convenience) revert to the "Applied Styles" selection.

No, you can certainly go to Load style, and then evern select the correct document (so I had my hopes up), but the style is still nowhere to be seen, and therefore cannot be selected.

Let's not go into Templates, we have had to hire a high-paid consultant to just fix Templates, i don't have time for that now. I just want multiple headers and footers in one document.

No, already did that, I tried all options (Hierarchical, All styles, Applied styles...all options in the menu), the Style can only be selected in a document that already contains the style, so it is not of much use. It just tells you the name of the style the document is made in.

ok, I can now import the style, you have to select 'overwrite', and then it works...but of course LOL, it now just overwrites the existing style with the imported style...LOL

again, just one style for the whole document, not what I needed

oh, and the tabs are different between the two documents....I don't suppose you can't use multiple tabs/layouts in one document either?

Every paragraph can have its own tab stops.

If you want complete flexibility then instead of using headers and footers an alternative is to place text frames in the same position which are anchored to the page - then you can put whatever you want in them.
