[Solved] What folder is 'standard.dic' file in
OK what the subject should say is.
what folder is the 'standard.doc' file in so I can delete some mis-spelt words?
First I looked at the openoffice help that was not help full
Then I looked at internet search engines that was not help.
Then I came to this forum and and I freaked out. I could not believe it
the little tiny box to put in the information
BUT GET A GRIP OF THIS! I put what is the folder for standard doc into the search box a very tiny box and it changed it to +what +is +the +folder +for +standard +doc
and came up just about any result that used one or more of those words I had FAR OUT
Sometimes I think [will lets not go there it is not good]
Well anyway freak me out again if you can give me the answer and better still if you know it

Dont make me froth at the mouth, Windows 98se was totally brilliant
Windows 10 has the biggest useless search engine of the lot,
I can get a filename from a folder put it into the search box windows 10, it spends many hours and it comes up with lots of other file names but not the one I asked for
[edit add on: in fact I am not 100% sure it is called 'standard.doc']
if it had of worked I would use it and not waste my time here

The only Windows I have access to is a 32 bit Windows XP; I have just checked and it has no "standard.doc"; I regret I cannot help further.

I just thought when you download a dictionary what folder do you put it in

If the dictionary is of type .oxt, simply double click it, and it will start OpenOffice and install itself as an extension. With /Tools /Extension manager you can choose to disable or remove that dictionary.

Yes I know it should right the first time but sometimes the wrong does slip in.
this information should be available in the help files that come with openoffice
it is really beginning to stress me out
On Internet it talkes about a folder called appData the same web page says it is short for 'application Data' (oh come on sure that is not misleading)
anyway I put that into the search box windows 10 and the first thing it want to do is search internet for the folder that should be in my laptop

The file you're looking for is named "standard.dic", not "standard.doc".RichardPrincipal wrote:OK what the subject should say is.

If you just want to delete some words from "standard.dic", there is a tool provided for that. Select Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids > User-defined dictionaries. Highlight "standard [Alll]" and click Edit.

The Forum is manned by volunteers on a pro bono basis. They answer as they know and as they have time.

For your future use for searches on Windows try Everything. For free, better than Windows search and very, very fast.RichardPrincipal wrote:Dont make me froth at the mouth, Windows 98se was totally brilliant

Agent Ransack is quite good also for file name search.

Re: [Solved] What folder is 'standard.dic' file in
If a user only needs to search for file names, then Everything would probably be better. If a user needs to search for file content, then Windows Search would probably be better.
Everything indexes file names in all folders but does not index file content. Windows Search indexes file names and file content in folders under the Users folder but excludes AppData. This would make indexing faster in Everything but would make searching for file content slower.

Admin access is required for Everything. No luck for me on my corporate machine.
DocFetcher is good for content search.

Re: [Solved] What folder is 'standard.dic' file in
I'm not up on the fine details of Everything, I only ever do simple searching for files now that I'm getting older and can't remember where I put 'stuff' so easily. However, in Everything Options - General it is possible to turn off 'Run as administrator' -- hover the mouse over the option text and you get a balloon with the details. Don't know if that will make any difference for you.Hagar Delest wrote:Admin access is required for Everything. No luck for me on my corporate machine.
P.S. The option 'Everything Service' seems related to the setting mentioned above.

Okay, Hagar. I'm not trying to start an argument. Seems to me you know more about this than I do, fair enough, I take your word on good faith. I just find it simple to use and it covers my needs, quickly.Hagar Delest wrote:But it is needed to index NTFS drives...
